A real-time strategy taking place in a fantasy universe inspired by Nordic mythology and the Viking way of life. Northgard allows the players to lead a group of Vikings, who after years of tedious exploration have found a mysterious, resource-rich land. To attain their goal of fame and fortune, they will have to face numerous dangers scattered across the new land. Northgard’s gameplay is based on classic real-time strategy games such as Age of Empires, Age of Mythology, or The Settlers. Aside from resource gathering, building settlements, and battles with dozens of units, the game introduces survival elements - the player receives the duty of keeping his clan safe through long, frosty winters. The clan will be facing bloodthirsty wolves, undead warriors, and various mythical creatures, including giants, with whom we can create an alliance. Northgard employs 3D graphics with a light, cartoonish design, while the game itself is seen from an isometric perspective.
Vikings: Wolves of Midgard (PC)
RPG 24 March 2017
A hack-and-slash role-playing game set in a world inspired by Norse myths, developed by Games Farm and Kalypso Media. The protagonist is Ulfung, a Viking clan chieftain, whose village is completely destroyed, while he becomes the leader of the surviving warriors in their quest to try to save Midgard from Ragnarok. Mechanics-wise, the game is clearly inspired by the popular Diablo series. At the start, you choose your warrior's gender and class, and then explore a range of locations and eliminate hordes of enemies. Apart from the more mundane weapons such as war hammers, axes, swords and bows, you can also use special items and amulets, which affect your character's abilities. Vikings: Wolves of Midgard features an interesting character development system, the option of rebuilding your village step by step, and an apocalyptic winter you have to seek shelter from, e.g. by looking for any heat sources.
Action October 2017
A two-dimensional exploration action adventure game with RPG and survival elements, developed by the debuting Ellada Games. The action is set in a fantasy world inspired by Viking mythology. We assume the role of a warrior whose funeral ship has been kidnapped by demons and taken into a mythical kingdom of cold and ice, the eponymous Niffelheim. The cursed creatures want the protagonist to seek out for them an ancient artifact that threatens their existence. The gameplay mechanics combine elements of several genres. While playing, we deal mostly with exploration of the randomly generated world, performing various quests and fighting encountered enemies. Survival elements are equally important, though — in the game, we have to constantly acquire raw materials, food, craft various items, and systematically expand our hideout. The title also features an RPG character development system.
Mount & Blade: Warband - Viking Conquest (PC)
RPG 11 December 2014
The second DLC expansion for Mount & Blade: Warband - an action-RPG sandbox game. Viking Conquest is set in Britain and Scandinavia, focusing on the conquests of the titular Vikings. Similar to the previous, "Napoleonic" expansion, the creators were inspired by a fan-made modification Brytenwalda - they improved it with the help of its original creators. This time however, the expansion introduces a single player story campaign, apart from a variety of multiplayer modes, such as Coastal Assault or Warlord. Said campaign focuses on plundering expeditions to the eastern Britain, conducted by the sons of Ragnar Lodbrok - a Nordic leader. The player is thrown into the midst of fighting and numerous political intrigues. The game's map contains over 300 towns, representing different countries and cultures. Also, an ability to both travel by sea and fight on the waters was implemented - the player can build and buy different kinds of ships as well. As usual, a significant layer of authenticity underlies the contents in the expansion.
Project Wight (PC)
An FPP action game with stealth elements, developed by indie studio The Outsiders. The game is set in the alternative Middle Ages, where Scandinavia is inhabited not only by Vikings, but also by a forgotten race of sapient beasts. You play as one such creature, observing how it grows up into a ferocious predator. At first, Project Wight seems like a stealth game, as the beast is weak and cannot fight, so it has to sneak past enemies and hide in places humans are unable to reach. As the game progresses, however, the protagonist learns how to violently get rid of foes, run amazingly fast, and even glide and deafen enemies with a horrific scream. The game utilizes the Unity technology, and the 3D visuals are very detailed and feature realistic lighting effects.
The Banner Saga (PC)
RPG 14 January 2014
Inspired by the Nordic mythology, a cRPG developed by the independent studio Stoic, whose members worked on, for example, Star Wars: The Old Republic. The action takes us to a world where fratricidal bloodshed between the gods led to chaos and wars. This is an "on the road" type of story, divided into two main plot branches, telling the stories of two Viking parties trying to escape from the threat posed by a mysterious, stone-like race called the Dredge, born as the result of gods’ experiments. Set in fantasy realities, the gameplay combines adventure and RPG elements with a turn-based combat system. With game's progress, your party gains experience and becomes more and more powerful. Also, the decisions you make will exert heavy influence on the plot. The game features amazing 2D graphics, employing art style similar to that of Walt Disney productions.
Valhalla Hills (PC)
Strategy 19 November 2015
An economic strategy game developed by Funatics and a spiritual successor to the once popular Cultures series. The game focuses on a Viking tribe whose members, after dying on the field of glory, find the gates of Valhalla closed shut. This turns out to be the result of a dispute between Odin and his son Leko, who failed his exam in godhood. As a result, he gets sent back to Earth, along with the souls of fallen Vikings, and the player must help them get back to Valhalla. While playing, you need to look after your tribe’s safety, protect them from wild beasts, as well as provide them with food and warm clothes. To this end, you have construct new production buildings and create thriving economy. Interestingly, the game does not give you direct control over your people. Instead, you have to influence their behavior by constructing appropriate buildings and encouraging them to engage in a particular activity.
Wartile is an RTS with elements of card and board games. The game takes place in a dark fantasy world inspired by the Norse mythology. We control a party of vikings on a raid. Gameplay focuses on real-time battles between groups of warriors. Each of them has their own strengths and weaknesses, and the key to victory lies in taking advantage of them. Another important gameplay element is the deck of cards built by the players. Those cards will not only power up our warriors, but also activate both offensive and defensive actions. Cards also play an important role in exploration. Battles take place on three-dimensional maps that are divided into hexagonal tiles, and lay of the land, which is an important tactical element that should be taken under consideration when we are preparing our strategy. As a result, Wartile brings to mind a turn-based strategy that somehow takes place in real-time. Along with the story driven campaign Wartile offers a multiplayer mode. The game uses Unreal Engine 4.
The Great Whale Road (PC)
RPG December 2017
A strategy role-playing game set in the early Middle Ages, and the first production by Sunburned Games. The game takes place in the 7th century Europe, and there is a large focus on historical accuracy and the plot, divided into campaign for each of the playable nations (e.g. the Danish, the Franks, the Picts and the Anglo-Saxons). Independently of the chosen nation, you play as a chief of a small clan, whose duty is to care for their home village and to lead their warriors during the battles with enemies. The gameplay revolves around two seasons. While you spend winter mostly in the village, planning and managing your people and resources, in summer you sail out, usually to raid others. While the exploring part takes place in real time, the combat is turn based and features card game elements.
The Banner Saga 3 (PC)
The Banner Saga 3 is a third game of turn-based strategy games series with RPG elements developed by Stoic and inspired by Viking culture and beliefs. The plot continues the story from the previous games of the series. Once again, we lead a caravan of brave warriors who, in the face of the impending end of the world, has to defeat evil once and for all. When it comes to gameplay mechanics, not much has changed. The game is still a turn-based strategy with RPG elements. We will meet many NPCs, some of them will join us, and some will give us various quests to do. In combat, we lead a group of heroes who have different abilities and equipment. We can pitch camp to level up our warriors and equip them with better item between the battles. The Banner Saga 3 has a bit more darker, hand drawn 2D visuals that bring to mind Disney animated movies.

Die for Valhalla! (PC)
Action October 2017
A dynamic beat ‘em-type up production developed by an independent Polish studio – Monster Couch. In this game, a player assumes the role of a Valkyrie – ghostly witch with incredible powers sent by Odin to Midgard (the realm of men) to fight off a monster invasion. As the main protagonist upon arrival on Earth becomes mortal and can easily die under enemies’ blows, the only way to complete the quest of saving the Earth is to possess the bodies of Vikings and use their skills in battles to come. In Die for Valhalla!, players, who see the action from a side perspective, can experience Vikings battling hordes of adversaries and large bosses. The Valkyrie uses ethereal weapons to attack enemies, while the possessed Vikings represent various classes like the Berserker, who masterfully wields two axes, or the Hunter who is able to quickly change his position and attack from the distance with a bow. Interestingly, the seasoned Valkyries can take the control over not only the Vikings, but also hostile warriors, monsters, and objects. What is more, Valkyries can summon fallen heroes from Valhalla. Apart from the single player mode, the game offers a cooperative multiplayer mode allowing up to 4 players to join their forces against the monster invasion. The Unity engine technology, on which the game is based, features appealing visuals resembling those of the well-established Don’t Starve.
Fighting 25 February 2016
An online team fighting game inspired by the Vikings and the Nordic mythology, developed by the debuting Shield Break studio, established by former employees of Blizzard, Activision, and Riot Games. It takes us to the Nordic underworld, and the player’s characters are – as you can easily guess by the title – faithful admirers of beer. Belonging to one of the several classes, they specialize in different types of weapons: swords, hammers, daggers, or bows. Game focuses on rivalry of feuding groups of Vikings, requiring team work and proper usage of individual skills of each hero. Gameplay combines classic action fighting games with hack’n’slash titles, though developers gave up on extreme realism to offer a unique style and flat-out joy of playing. Title employs the advanced Unreal Engine 4.
Fated: The Silent Oath (PC)

We assume the role of the father who tries to protect his loved ones from the wrath of gods. The action is shown from the first-person perspective. While playing, we engage in activities that are typical of the genre, such as exploration, having conversations, and solving puzzles. There are some arcade sequences, as well. At the same time, the title is full of emotions, putting a great emphasis on such emotions as bravery, love, sacrifice, compassion, despair, or joy.
