Dragon's Dogma Online (PS3)
RPG July 2017
An online game from the popular action RPG series by Capcom, started in 2012 with the console release of Dragon’s Dogma. We are taken to a completely new land and play as a member of a team hunting powerful foes and discovering the secrets of the game’s world. Our character (and the whole team) can be created with a provided character creator. If there are no players willing to cooperate with us, we can play by ourselves, with our pawns controlled by AI. Heroes can belong to one of 8 classes, which determines our game style and available techniques. An important feature is the freedom of exploration. The gameplay focuses on the arcade combat system, where attacks, dodges, grabs and climbing mightier opponents, as well as attacking different body parts plays a crucial role.
Resident Evil 2 Remake (PS3)
A remake of the second part of the famous survival-horror franchise Resident Evil, which debuted on the PlayStation console in 1998 and was later ported to other consoles and PC / Windows. Resident Evil 2 Remake was developed by the Capcom’s leading team, R&D Division 1, for the latest gaming platforms. The game is based on the original plot with slightly modified mechanics. The action takes place a few months after the events of the game’s first part, when after a moment of calmness, a deadly zombie epidemic once again plagues Raccoon City. The player follows the story of a rookie police officer Leon S. Kennedy and a young girl – Claire Redfield – who arrived in the city in search of her brother. Early into the story, the two protagonists are separated and from there on the action is seen from two different points of view, and the characters’ stories develop slightly differently.
Two Worlds II: Call of the Tenebrae (PS3)
The second major expansion to Two Worlds II – third-person fantasy RPG created by the Polish studio Reality Pump. Call of the Tenebrae was released six years after the core game, along with a remastered version of the latter, so it offers better graphics than the original title. Main focus of the DLC’s story is the new enemy – a vile race of sapient rat-like monsters, serving some even more powerful creatures that seek to destroy the world of Antaloor. You have to assemble your allies – both old friends and new characters – and stop this threat. Call of the Tenebrae offers a dozen or so hours of gameplay. The adventure takes place in various new locations where you can find new items, learn new skills and encounter new enemies. Although the DLC has large amount of single player content, it offers no upgrades for the multiplayer mode.
Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment (PS3)
Arcade 30 April 2017
Specter of Torment is a free DLC for the fan-favourite platform game Shovel Knight developed by Yacht Club Games. This time, we play as a new protagonist, the titular Specter. The expansion takes place before the events of the base game. In terms of gameplay, Specter of Torment is identical to the base game, combining the elements of a 2Dplatformer, RPG, and an action-adventure game. Once again, we observe the game from a side-scrolling perspective. We explore some new fantastic locations, solve simple environmental puzzles, and fight the enemies. However, Specter has a new move set and skill set at his disposal. Unlike his predecessor, he can climb on walls and other environmental objects, which opens new tactical possibilities for the players. The iconic shovel was replaced with a characteristic scythe.
Titan Invasion (PS3)
A compilation of two games developed by an independent British studio, Puppy Games, now re-released on PlayStation consoles. The package contains Titan Attacks! and Revenge of the Titans – two titles previously released on PC in 2011 and 2012 respectively. The first game is a two-dimensional retro shooter, heavily inspired by the classic Space Invaders. We assume the role of a commander of the last tank on Earth, and our objective is to save the planet from invading hordes of aliens. Revenge of the Titans is a classic tower defense title – the player builds various defensive structures which are to repel continuous waves of attacking enemies. Both games return with a reworked interface, and are now running in 60 frames per second. As could be expected, the controls have been remapped to fit a console gamepad (or PS Vita buttons).
