Spider-Man 2: The Game

The second entry in the series of third-person perspective action games about Spider-Man. The plot of the game is based on the movie that has the same title. The player assumes the role of Peter Parker, a boy who gained spider superpowers during an accident in a laboratory. His main antagonist is Otto Octavius (in the criminal underworld known as Doctor Octopus), a scientist equipped with mechanical tentacles controlled by brainwaves. Depending on the platform, the game has completely different mechanics and was developed by different studios. The main console versions offers fully three-dimensional, open world with advanced physics and they take place in realistically recreated virtual version of Manhattan. Other versions have simplified mechanics that use features of side-scrolling action games and platform games.

Spider-Man: The Game for PC / Windows is the second entry in the series of games about the adventures of Spider-Man. Similarly to the first game, it is related to the story of the movie that has same title.

Plot

The main protagonist of the game is Peter Parker, who obtained super powers during an accident in a laboratory. He will face Otto Octavius, who in criminal world is known as Doctor Octopus and has mechanical, brainwave controlled tentacles. Spider-Man must face other opponents as well, including: Rhino – a strong guy equipped with a very resistant armor; Mysterio – master of illusions and special effects; Puma – half-blood Indian that intends to become the shaman of New York.

Mechanics

The game for PC / Windows was developed by The Fizz Factor and it differs greatly from its console version. It is a simple third-person perspective action game. As Spider-Man, the player must complete more than a dozen of uncomplicated tasks combined into larger episodes. Each mission requires the player to defeat one of the main opponents and the final battle is played against Doctor Octopus. While traveling through the narrow streets of New York (both in the air and on the ground), the player must also eliminate regular thugs. Sadly, the game lacks advanced combo system available in console editions that were developed by Treyarch.

Technical aspects

Spider-Man 2 for PC / Windows is a simple game dedicated mostly for younger players or indiscriminate fans of Spider-Man. Simple missions, very easy combat and linearity won’t impress any advanced player. Graphics aren’t impressive as well, as they were created with limited resources and are filled with bugs (like cars that disappear in thin air).

Spider-Man 2: The Game is another platform game for Game Boy Advance. Once again the player can assume the role of Peter Parker, a young man that seems to have a regular life in Queens, New York. However, he has a secret. He is a superhero with DNA sequence that was modified by a spider that bit him during an experiment in school. He has eyes of an eagle, enormous strength and incredible adhesion that enable him to protect the humanity from various emergencies and threats.

Spider-Man 2: The Game isn’t the first game about this superhero available on Game Boy. Other games like Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Enter the Sinister Six for GBC and Spider-Man: The Movie and Spider-Man: Mysterio’s Menace for GBA debuted before it.

Plot

In Spider-Man 2: The Game for Game Boy Advance the player must face a big thug with mechanical tentacles – Doc Ock. Before Doc Ock became a criminal, he was named Otto Octavius and was working on nuclear physics. Due to irresponsible experiments, he became mentally unstable and his creation took control of him. Now all hope lies in Spider-Man.

Mechanics

Spider-Man 2: The Game contains around 30 different missions that use 2D and 3D sceneries. The missions consist mostly of jumping between buildings, climbing, using web, fighting numerous enemies (including Mysterio, Rhino and Lizard) and completing missions. The game also features cinematic intro, dynamic music and a few dozen of sound effects.

The console version of Spider-Man 2: The Game is a completely different game than the PC version. Of course, similarly to its predecessor, the title is related to the movie with the same title.

Plot

The story of Spider-Man 2: The Game for GameCube starts two years after the events depicted in first game, in which Peter Parker appeared on the streets of New York as Spider-Man, the enemy of evil. Now he is in much worse situation. Due to an accident, Otto Octavius, in criminal world known as Doctor Octopus, gained incredible abilities. The mad scientist is equipped with mechanical tentacles that are controlled by his brainwaves. He intends to get rid of Spider-Man, who he blames for the accident. In addition to that, the player must face another threat – Lizard, a monster created during an unsuccessful tissue regeneration experiment.

Mechanics

Treyarch recreated the whole Manhattan for the game. Thanks to that, Spider-Man 2: The Game for GameCube contains real buildings located next to fictional places. The streets of the city are filled with life. The protagonist can freely run or swing through the city, taking advantage of rooftops, lamps, antennas and balconies.

Spider-Man 2 is an open world game. The player has a degree of freedom in selecting missions required for completing the game. He can also complete many side missions. The developers implemented a special random events system as well. Each time player starts the game, he won’t know what odd behavior the street gangs will present. Making their life harder will provide special points that enable the player to upgrade attacks, combos and skills.

During the combat the player can use melee skills, webs and spider senses. The latter enables the player to watch enemy movement in slow motion and even discover who will attack next.

Spider-Man 2: The Game for PlayStation Portable is an exceptionally dynamic action game in which the player can assume the role of Spider-Man. The action is presented by using a third-person perspective. The title is related to the famous blockbuster movie. However, the console version of Spider-Man 2 isn’t limited only to recreating the story presented in the movie. The titular protagonist encounters many other villains that are known from the Marvel comics. The PlayStation Portable version was developed by Vicarious Visions, a studio that also created Nintendo DS version of this title.

Plot

In Spider-Man 2: The Game for PlayStation Portable the titular character must face doctor Otto Octavius, a mad scientist also known as Doc Ock. However, the list of enemies also contains other villains like Mysterio, Rhino, Shocker and Vulture. The protagonist will also face regular thugs that aren’t very challenging for him.

Mechanics

The singleplayer campaign of Spider-Man 2: The Game for PlayStation Portable contains nineteen large levels that take place in Manhattan. Contrary to the first game that was highly linear, the sequel contains many side missions usually focused on helping civilians.

The main protagonist is capable of many actions. Spider-Man can easily move around by using his webs. He can also “stick” to the walls of buildings. The developers implemented many melee attacks and superattacks as well, for example enabling the player to imprison selected bandits inside a giant web. In the PlayStation Portable version of the game the protagonist can also use unique actions, like for example forming an unusual cocoon.

Technical aspects

One of the main advantages of Spider-Man 2: The Game for PlayStation Portable is its graphics. The developers of the handheld version of the game created an advanced city model that can be freely explored. Realistic movement animation is worth mentioning as well. The game lacks any multiplayer modes.
