STALKER Online is a mix of FPS and MMORPG genres, being an online adaptation of the post-apocalyptic shooter cycle by an Ukrainian studio, GSC World. In contrast to the main series, the game was developed by a different team at Russian Cybertime Systems.

The action takes place in a world known from the previous games. The disaster at Chernobyl nuclear power plant launched a series of mysterious and terrifying anomalies, transforming the surrounding areas into so-called Zones. In such places, the basic laws of physics do not apply, and the local fauna is subjected to horrific mutations. At the same time, you can find artifacts that properly used allow scientists to make huge technology jumps. There is no shortage of adventurers who venture deep into in the Zones in search of valuable loot. Such people are called stalkers, and the players assume the role of them.

The game starts with creating your own character, whose capabilities are determined by statistics that can be developed in the course of the game. S.T.A.L.K.E.R Online has a mechanism that simulates the natural changes in the virtual world, make the locations of anomalies and mutants not permanent. The developers prepared a huge variety of missions and tasks in which we can fight both other players (PvP) and enemies controlled by artificial intelligence (PvE). There are also opportunities to produce and trade items. The gameplay mechanics support cooperation between stalkers. They form themselves into teams and create and fortify their own bases. The creators of the game constructed it in such a way, so that both the combat lovers and the people who prefer to explore the world and use the survival skills, can enjoy it.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R Online was is powered by BigWorld engine, which was built from scratch by Cybertime Systems. Despite the use of a completely new technology, however, the authors failed to reproduce specific, dirty, and gloomy visual style that millions of gamers have grown to love in the previous games in the cycle.
