Broken Sword: The Serpent’s Curse is the fifth installment in the popular series of adventure games initiated back in 1996. It was created by the British studio Revolution Software that has been developing the franchise since its inception. It is worth noting that the project became reality thanks to the Kickstarter pledges, among other things. They allowed the developer to hire more employees, many of which have previously worked on the preceding games in the series, make its own decisions as to the shape of the game, as well as to release it without the third-party help.

The Serpent’s Curse goes back to the roots of the Broken Sword series, retreating from the direction taken in its third and fourth installment. Yet again, we follow the adventures of two protagonists, an American lawyer (George Stobbart) and a French journalist (Nico Collard), who solve mysteries from the past. We visit both Paris and London, as well as numerous exotic locations all around the world. The classic gameplay model does not deviate from what the fans of the genre have come to love throughout the years. Similarly to other point and click games, we gather information, talk to many characters and solve sundry brain teasers and logic puzzles.

Instead of realistic 3D graphics of the two previous installments in the series, the players get to enjoy hand-drawn backgrounds and the comic-style graphics that refer to the golden age of adventure games which occurred in the first half of 90s. The character models remained three-dimensional, though, which allowed for smooth and more natural motion animation. In order to make them indistinguishable from the rich and colorful scenography, they were created with the use of cel-shading technique.
