Liege is a tactical, team role-playing game based on jRPG productions with elements inspired by chess. It was developed by an indie studio codagames, with the game's head author, John Rhee. The production is an epic story about ordinary people finding themselves in extraordinary circumstances, forced to fight for their country's future. It's a drama about family, sacrifice, love, and death.

Plot

One late autumn in the kingdom of Liege, the king, the queen, and all their heirs mysteriously fell asleep and never woke up. Soon afterwards, a fierce power struggle began. The escalating conflict became unbearable, and the kingdom was engulfed in a bloody civil war. These events are the background for the story of heroes hailing from different factions, from nobles, who claim to have a right to the throne, through the royal army soldiers, to an underground society of exiles planning a revolution.

Mechanics

In Liege, you control a team of characters of various classes, each of them having their distinct characteristics and abilities. To succeed, you need the team members to cooperate. The combat is turn-based, and—since the game is partially based on chess—requires tactical thinking. To win, you have to use your action points in the right way and divide them between unit movement, attack, and defense.

Technical aspects

Liege features hand-drawn visuals, inspired by Japanese RPGs of old, and even though their style is rather oldschool, they utilize modern technology and fit the game's atmosphere, just like the orchestral soundtrack.
