Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is another installment of the very popular gangster action games, this time created for Nintendo DS. Despite the smaller size of the console and hardware limitations, the developers managed to create a full-fledged installment of the GTA series.

Story and gameplay

The owners of the Nintendo DS portable console can return to the city known from previous installments of the series – to Liberty City. However, in order to keep the fans interested, the city consists of completely new areas. The layout of the streets was slightly modified as well and some new paths were added. The game contains all the key features of the predecessors – a large open world (the city is filled with pedestrians and cars), dynamical weather conditions and passing of time (day-night cycle), extensive plot, interesting missions and large dose of freedom. The main character is Huang Lee, a member of a Chinese criminal group. The main protagonist intends to have his revenge on people responsible for murdering his father and stealing the sword that was a valuable family memento.

This version of the game introduces various changes to the original formula of the series. Chinatown Wars contains slightly shorter and less challenging missions. It also offers the possibility to repeat failed quests. Other changes are the auto aim system (R button) and slightly simplified vehicle steering mechanics. The police intervention system was changed as well – this time, in order to escape from police cars the player must destroy them.

GTA: Chinatown Wars fully utilizes the advantages of the platform for which it was developed. It makes good use of the touch screen by offering various minigames (such as breaking into vehicles, scratching lottery coupons, assembling sniper weapon), and provides an intuitive interface. The interface adds to the atmopshere – it looks similar to a PDA and allows checking e-mails and the map, using GPS, listening to music (including from one of the radio stations that are characteristic for the series) and checking statistics. The data of player’s progress can be shared with the world by using Rockstar Games internet website.

Technical aspect

The action is shown from a perspective that compromise between the top-down- and a traditional isometric view. The game uses a specific cartoonish graphics created with the cel-shading technology – characters have black contours and the graphics in general are colorful.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is a refreshed mobile re-edition of the popular series of games developer by Rockstar. The original was released in 2009 on Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable handheld devices. Contrary to the original, the conversion for the Apple iOS devices was created by War Drum Studios.

Story

A traditionally complex story of the game puts the player in the shoes of Huang Lee – a member of Chinese mafia who wants to have his revenge on murderers responsible for killing his father. They are also in possession of a valuable sword that for centuries belonged to Lee’s family. During the game the protagonist goes deep into the criminal underworld dominated by various branches of the Chinese Triad. The game takes place on the streets of Liberty City, known from Grand Theft Auto III. This version of Liberty City differs from others by featuring new locations and a slightly changed street layout.

Gameplay

Gameplay mechanics of Chinatown Wars are similar to the core series. The game offers a large open world that is filled with life. However, the game was strongly simplified and adapted to the limitations of mobile devices. Because of that, many things are easier in the game. For example, vehicle driving system was simplified, auto-aim system was added so that the police that chase the player can be eliminated. In addition to that, the missions become simpler. In case of failing a mission, the player can repeat it again without any trouble. A dynamically changing weather and a day and night cycle is a nuisance introduced in the game.

Technology

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars shows the action from a perspective that is unordinary for the series. It combines the classic isometric view with a top-down perspective. The graphics of the game are different as well – thanks to the use of cel-shading it became more attractive. The Apple iOS version of the game has improved graphics in better resolution and with better lighting effects. The controls were completely remodeled and now can be adapted to player’s preferences. It is also possible to play the game by using a game controller. Another feature of the game that is worth mentioning are minigames during which the player can break into cars, scratch lottery coupons or assemble a sniper weapon.
