Mortal Kombat X

A sequel to the 2011 game created by NetherRealm, which restored the leading position in gaming to Mortal Kombat, a long-standing, cult fighting game franchise launched in 1993 by the Midway / Acclaim duet. Once again, we get a wide array of playable fighters – both known from the previous games in the series, as well as brand new ones. Moreover, each one comes in several varieties, differing in tactics and combat style. Duels are fought on 2.5D arenas filled with interactive elements that you can use in combat. There is of course no shortage of spectacular finishers, so-called fatalities. The game’s core features an expansive story mode set 25 years after the events presented in the previous game. The authors implemented numerous both local and online multiplayer modes, enabling the players to compete with one another in a global struggle for primacy.

Mortal Kombat X for PC / Windows is a tenth entry in the classic series of brutal fighting games that exist since 1992, as well as a second game of the franchise by NetherRealm studio. In other words, we received a continuation of a very good Mortal Kombat from 2011.

Gameplay and plot

Obviously, the basis of the gameplay remained unchanged. Two fighters – chosen from the vast pool of characters, including such icons as Raiden, Scorpion or Sub-Zero – meet on an arena and proceed to a bloodbath duel to death, often ending with a spectacular and brutal “fatality”. You can play in both singleplayer or multiplayer modes. In case of the former, duels take place within a campaign, telling a story that is pretty rich for a fighting game.

There are also some innovations in the tenth Mortal Kombat, compared to its predecessors. Some of them stem out from the fact that the events in the game take place as much as twenty five years after the end of the previous one. Hence, some warriors are absent - replaced by new characters like Cassie Cage, daughter of Johnny and Sonia, or Kotal Kahn, based on Aztecs’ deities. What’s more, each fighter is available in few variations, differing from each other with style, available attacks and used tactics. There are previously unseen arenas as well. Moreover, online options have been expanded – players can duel as a part of global fight for domination, during which state and image of the world change constantly with each face-off. Also, some previously unavailable forms of fights are present.

Technical aspects

Mortal Kombat X clearly looks better than its predecessor. This is mainly due to a fact that the game has been published for eighth generation of consoles as well (Xbox One and PlayStation 4).

Mortal Kombat X is a mobile fighting game developed by NetherRealm studio and published for Apple iOS system. Production is based on a free-to-play model with microtransactions.

Plot

Single player campaign follows a similar plot as its predecessor, though scenario has been strongly simplified. It takes place quarter of the century after events of ninth entry in Mortal Kombat series and traditionally revolves around titular martial arts tournament, the outcome of which will decide the fate of entire world. The flow of time resulted in aging of many returning characters, so the story focuses more on new generation of fighters.

Gameplay

Game is a typical fighting game, so our task is limited to fighting in one-on-one duels. Game mechanics has been adapted touch pad screens, with us performing moves and dodges by drawing proper gestures with fingers. Therefore, we are unable to move freely with our hero on the arena. Winning requires learning opponent’s style of attacking and figuring out which techniques will be most effective against him.

One of important features is collecting characters, similarly to a trading card game. We start with a small bunch of playable characters, with more being unlocked by winning duels and finishing challenges, expanding our deck. Aside from single player campaign, there also is an online multiplayer mode to compete with other players.

Mortal Kombat X for devices with Android OS is a mobile version of tenth entry in classic fighting game series, known from PC and stationary consoles. Game has been developed by NetherRealm studio, which created e.g. Mortal Kombat and Injustice: Gods Among Us. Title is based on popular free-to-play model supporting microtransactions.

Plot

The core of gameplay is a single player campaign. While it remained slightly simplified, it matches the story of the core version of the game. It takes place around quarter of the century after the events of previous games, and traditionally revolves around a great martial arts tournament named Mortal Kombat. But due to the flow of time, the story mainly concentrates on a new generation of fighters not present in previous games.

Gameplay

In terms of game mechanics, Mortal Kombat X has been adapted to specifications of mobile devices. That’s one of reasons why we can’t move our character freely, as the game comes down to performing attacks and dodges using proper gestures, executed by our fingers on the touchpad. Developers made sure that each fighter is distinguishable by a different fighting style. Succeeding in the game is equally impacted by understanding opponent’s techniques and using proper moves to counter them most effectively.

It is worth noting, that fighting elements of Mortal Kombat X for Android OS are complemented with features of trading card games. When we start playing, we possess a limited amount of fighters, with new ones being unlocked as the game progress, which results in making our own and unique deck of heroes. This part of gameplay is important due to the presence of online duels’ variation, in which only previously unlocked characters can take part.
