WRC 5 FIA World Rally Championship

The fifth installment in a series of racing games initiated in 2010 and devoted to rallying.

WRC 5 is the fifth installment in a rally game series originated by Black Bean Games in 2010, and later taken over by Bigben Interactive. The game has official license of World Rally Championship (WRC), letting you participate in the 2015 season and offering authentic special stages, cars, teams, etc. In contrast with the previous four installments in the series, which were produced by Italian studio Milestone, the development of the fifth part for PC, PS4 and etc. was handed down to French developer Kylotonn Games, who did not have much experience in racing games.

Gameplay

WRC 5 offers three categories of competitive gameplay – WRC, WRC 2, and Junior WRC – each one featuring authentic drivers with their co-drivers, teams, and cars.

WRC 5 rallies take place on 65 special stages across 13 countries, including Sweden, Mexico, Finland, Wales, and Poland. Players can choose from over a dozen cars, e.g. Ford Fiesta RS, Subaru Impreza WRX, Citroen DS 3 RS, or Peugeot 208 T16.

The default play mode in WRC 5 on PC, PS4 and etc. is career, in which the player becomes a beginner driver, who sets out to make a name for himself, starting at Junior WRC. Here, you have to not only beat one track after another, but also repair and adjust your car to prepare it for upcoming challenges (advanced players are invited to tinker with over 20 different parameters themselves). Furthermore, the players also have to pick their team members and take care of their morale.

While programming the driving model, the developers' aim was to satisfy both casual drivers and veterans of virtual rallying. Therefore, WRC 5 offers customizable degree of realism when it comes to car behavior. Nevertheless, even on the most demanding settings, the game does not become an advanced simulation, like the classic Richard Burns Rally.

Game modes

Apart from the career, WRC 5 for PC, PS4 and etc. offers competitive gameplay in minor tournaments and single rally stages, as well as driving school for both beginners and advanced drivers. Besides, the game features all major multiplayer modes (online or hot-seat – in the latter, players try to get the best time on the same track, driving one after another).

Technology

The fact that the developer was changed in mid-development resulted in adoption of a new game engine – WRC 5 for PC, PS4 and etc. was based on Kt Engine HD, a technology developed by Kylotonn studio. Thanks to that, the new edition offers even better graphics than before, with the most noticeable things including: advanced weather effects, day and night cycle, and car damage visualization.
