Slain: Back From Hell

Warlocks vs Shadows is a two-dimensional fighting game for PC and WiiU set in a multidimensional world. It was developed by One More Level, an independent Polish studio. Initially, the title was being developed after hours. With time, the project transformed into an attractively-looking and dynamic production that bears a strong resemblance to the spectacular Risk of Rain in terms of convention. After two months in the Greenlight program, the game was warmly received by the community and was eventually greenlit. Players also appreciated Warlocks vs Shadows at gamescom 2014 where the title earned many fans. The Poles, wanting to continue this brilliant run of luck, decided to start a fundraising campaign at wspieram.to. Unfortunately, the fundraiser turned out to be a failure because the developers failed to collect 13 thousand PLN within the time limit. However, the Kickstarter campaign that ran in parallel proved successful and the studio gathered over 26 thousand dollars.

Plot

Warlocks vs Shadows for PC and WiiU lets us assume the role of one of several available warlocks (ten in total, each having at least unique abilities) and traverse a dark, original, and stylistically attractive world. In our journey to the Shadow World, where the ultimate task is to save other mages, we will visit fancy locations, including ruined cathedrals, green ruins, Wall Street of the mid-20th century, and foggy swamps. Everything is naturally embellished with characteristic pixel-art graphics.

Mechanics

While playing, we fight hordes of enemies (each having their unique skills and attack patterns) and powerful bosses that await us at the end of every world. Moreover, there is no shortage of procedurally generated items to obtain, including various kinds of weapons and magical gear.

The production also offers many varied game modes.

Game modes

The said title, despite the emphasis put on the single player campaign, boasts its potential in cooperation modes for up to four players, as well. The game also features a Versus module (classical 2 vs 2 or 1 vs 1 deathmatch).

Technical aspects

Warlocks vs Shadows’s soundtrack combines metal and electronic music genres — heavy guitars play alongside drums and synthesizers. Every available location is characterized by its own musical theme. The audio layer, although simple, is as varied as the worlds and characters implemented in the game.
