Where The Water Tastes Like Wine for PC is a debut-project by the independent studio Dim Bulb Games established in 2014. The studio was set up by the industry veteran – Johnnemann Nordhagen (BioShock 2, among others), and co-developed the critically acclaimed Gone Home. Kellan Jett is also involved in the production.

Plot

Where The Water Tastes Like Wine particularly focuses on the non-linear story set in American folklore. The title discusses travelling and stories about travelling, which you are told during gameplay and which you pass on to the characters you meet. The title largely draws inspiration from the American culture: starting with literature (novels by Mark Twain, Jack Kerouac, and Joch Steinbeck) and ending with blues and folk music. Moreover, you meet diverse communities: European immigrants, black slaves from the South, and Native Americans.

Travelling is the most important element and the focus of the game. The title depicts both the romantic picture of a drifter living from day to day and the tragedy of people forced to leave their homes. Just like in Gone Home, Nordhagen tries to make us think about matters rarely discussed in this medium.

Mechanics

Gameplay does not bother us with complicated puzzles or challenging combat. Instead, the player is free to roam through the big and open world filled with surreal places and creatures. While being three-dimensional, the world features a number of two-dimensional elements. Interaction with other travellers, who can tell you their stories and listen to yours, plays a key role.

Technical aspects

The visual layer was entrusted to Kellan Jett who created an intriguing world from the borders of a fairy tale and real-life locations.
