Need for Speed: Underground is one of the best racing games created for Game Boy Advance. The game was developed by Electronic Arts, and it does not differ from its equivalents for home consoles in most aspects. The player assumes the role of a racer, who has entered the illegal street racing community. The races take place in densely populated urban areas, always at night. The player's goal is to obtain money, fame and respect.

Gameplay

In Need for Speed: Underground for Game Boy Advance, the player begins behind the wheels of less powerful cars. Gradually, they can obtain better rides and upgrade the owned vehicles. Car modification was substantially extended in this edition. Although the player will not encounter licensed car parts as in the PS2, Xbox and GCN versions, the GBA version is not actually inferior, for it still offers plenty of parts, which makes the game equally enjoyable. Challenging other driver for a race means doing it under their own rules. When the player is challenged by someone else, the situation is reversed. The player can choose the track and set the number of laps for example. Moreover, the game features a few kinds of racing challenges. The graphics render the 3D effect successfully, and the cars are masterfully designed. Among all the other games released for GBA (especially racing games), Need for Speed: Underground offers very high quality visuals. Although some players may complain about the graininess of the graphics (a turn can be overlooked despite large-sized neon warning arrows, because objects at a larger distance simply blend with the rest of the environment), the bumper view is of help, for it facilitates making the surroundings out. The soundtrack comprises some of the songs available in the versions for other gaming systems. The gameplay is fast-paced and the controls are correct. Both the visuals and audio are definitely the greatest advantages of the game.

Extensive car modification is not enough to achieve success in spectacular, illegal street races. The player has to increase their driving skills in order to stay in the race. The game offers plenty of racing duels and other challenges taking place in atmospheric urban locations, always at night. The player gets an opportunity to become a true driving champion, by mastering long and extremely speedy sections or sharp corners. The player has to prove their worth to the other drivers fond of direct rivalry and pure adrenaline. Racing is very atmospheric here, because the visuals feature plenty of different neon lights and other visual effects.

Gameplay

The game offers two special racing challenges: Drag Races (three drivers racing on a straight section of the road, reaching extreme speeds), and Street Racing.
