Tomba! is a remastered version of an iconic action platformer metroidvania. The original game was created by Whoopee Camp and released on PlayStation. The remaster was co-created by the original developers (led by Tokuro Fujiwara, the main director, producer and designer) and Limited Run Games.

Plot

Tomba! is set in a fantasy world, on an uncharted archipelago terrorized by the Seven Evil Pigs and their underlings, the Koma Pigs. The main protagonist is a boy named Tomba, from whom the Koma Pigs steal a valuable bracelet, a keepsake from his deceased grandfather. Tomba sets out on a journey to find the thieves and recover his treasure. He does not yet know this will take him on a grand adventure, during which he'll put an end to the villains' reign...

Mechanics

Tomba! is mostly a side-scroller; occasionally though, it changes to the isometric perspective. Tomba must travel through colorful locations, avoiding traps and environmental obstacles; in selected spots he can also jump between the foreground and background. On his way he must face and dispatch enemies, wielding blackjacks, boomerangs, or just biting them. Lost health can be restored by eating tasty fruit.

The people of the archipelago are friendly and can be interacted with, oftentimes giving us various quests. These involve looking for items, helping those in need or destroying obstacles blocking the way; in return we receive special points used to, for example, unlock bonus quests.

Technical aspects

Tomba! features colorful, cartoonish visuals. The game runs on the Carbon Engine, created with remasters in mind. The soundtrack was composed anew, by Fujita Harumi.
