Perception

A first-person horror adventure game and the debut project of The Deep End Games studio. In Perception, we play as a blind girl named Cassie, who tries to discover the mystery of a certain mansion, whose visions has been haunting her in her dreams for some time. It turns out that the place is haunted by a ghost, which has been terrorizing the inhabitants of the house, and now it targets Cassie. We explore the dark mansions and look for clues to reveal the dark past of the building. Due to her affliction, our heroine is unable to use any weapons, being armed only with her intellect and excellent hearing that provides her with a limited echolocation ability. The visuals, powered by Unreal Engine 4, consist mainly of black and white outlines of rooms and items, recreating the girl's unique perception.

Perception for PC / Windows is a unique first-person horror adventure game, created by the debuting studio The Deep End, established by experienced developers who worked on titles like Bioshock, Bioshock Infinite and Dead Space. The development costs have been covered mainly with funds gathered through Kickstarter.

Plot

We play as a blind girl named Cassie, who is trying to discover the mystery of an abandoned mansion that has been appearing in her dreams for some time. After few years of searching, our heroine finds it in the small village of Gloucester, Massachusetts. As it quickly turns out, the mansions is haunted by an evil ghost that has been terrorizing the town's residents for generations, and Cassie becomes its new target. She has to reveal the dark past of the house as fast as possible to avoid becoming another victim of the ghost.

Gameplay

While exploring the mansion, Cassie can’t use any weapon and is armed only with her intellect and extraordinary hearing, which allow her to check her surroundings with echolocation. The problem is that every noise made, for example, by the heroine’s stick can reveal our location and summon the ghost. When that happens, our only hope is to run and hide from the specter. Cassie can also throw objects or activate alarms located in some locations to distract the evil entity.

Cassie analyzes any clues we find, and that can reveal the dark past of the mansion, with her smartphone. When she manages to connect another piece of the puzzle, she goes back in time watching subsequent events that took place at the mansions in the last few decades.

Technology

Perception for PC / Windows is powered by the fourth generation of the Unreal Engine, though we will hardly have the opportunity to experience everything it has to offer. That’s because most of the time we will only see outlines of rooms and objects. This is how the developers decided to recreate heroine's extrasensory perception. The only exception are the scenes that show past events, revealing the grim history of the mansion.
