Shiness: The Lightning Kingdom

An unusual action RPG developed by French studio Enigami. The title takes place on planet Mahera which is inhabited by members of various species that live in symbiosis. Due to a civil war that took place years ago, the land was shattered into pieces and the survivors found refuge on islands floating in the space. The main protagonist of the game is Chado who together with his friend Poky crashed in a place called Adorn. The protagonists are quickly caught in a bigger intrigue that will determine the fate of the whole world. The gameplay of Shiness: The Lightning Kingdom is based on three pillars: exploration of various locations, fights with enemies and completing main and side quests. What’s interesting, the objectives can be completed in any way the player wants. For example, instead of using brute force, one can sneak past the opponents. The battles take place in real time – player participates in one on one duels while the companions are supporting their friends with ranged attacks. The game also contains a character development system which allows for using new combat techniques, spells and collecting better equipment. Unreal Engine 4 provides high-quality graphics.

Shiness: The Lightning Kingdom for PlayStation 4 is an action RPG financed in 2014 on Kickstarter (it’s campaign gathered almost 140 thousand dollars). The title was developed by French studio Enigami and it was published by Focus Home Interactive (the publisher of titles like Styx: Master of Shadows, Bound by Flame and Of Orcs and Men).

Plot

A long time ago there was a planet called Mahera. It was inhabited by members of various species who lived peacefully with each other, connected by the spiritual energy called Shi. After some time the civilizations blossomed, reducing the activity of Shi, causing a terrible war to start and breaking the world into pieces. Since then, all the races live separately on islands floating in the air. The player assumes the role of Chado who together with his friend Poky crashes on one of the islands. The protagonists were unlucky and crashed in a dangerous place called Adorn. In addition to that, soon the fate of the world started to depend on their actions. Luckily, after some time other heroes join them and help in completing the dangerous mission.

Mechanics

While playing Shiness: The Lightning Kingdom for PlayStation 4, the player will visit various realms where he will have main and side quests to complete. The developers allowed the player to complete them in various ways. For example, in order to obtain an item located in a cave protected by thugs, the player can kill all opponents and collect the item or sneak up there and steal it. He can also speak with the leader of the group who might decide to sell the item. Real-time combat is an important part of the gameplay. During the battles the action takes place on a special arena where the player uses magic and his fists against the opponent (which looks similar to a typical, simple fighting game). The duels are played one on one and the companions cannot enter the arena. It doesn’t mean they stand idly – they attack the opponent from distance. The enemies do the same to the player.

Since Shiness: The Lightning Kingdom is an RPG, the developers added a character development system. During the game the player learns new combat techniques and spells and he gains better equipment. It allows completing even harder quests.

Technical aspects

Shiness: The Lightning Kingdom for PlayStation 4 was developed by using Unreal Engine. Various versions of that engine powered many titles across the years. The newest edition was used in Ark: Survival Evolved, Fable Legends and many other games. The described title has cartoonish style similar to the one used in Japanese anime.
