Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition is the definitive release of the classic and legendary Duke Nukem 3D. The game, created by 3D Realms studio, was originally released in 1996, becoming a milestone in the development of first-person shooters. The title contains all the official add-ons that were released up to the time of its release, including the extended edition of the original (the so-called Atomic Edition) as well as the original version. Devolver Digital, a company specializing in the independent productions, and General Arcade studio are responsible for this edition.

Plot

The action of Duke Nukem 3D begins in 21st century Los Angeles, which has been captured by the alien civilization. In addition, the invaders gradually transform the remaining people into monsters - the only chance to restore the old order is the titular Duke.

Mechanics

Although this production is focused mainly on quick action, to complete some stages, we will have to think a little bit, especially if we try to find all the secrets. They don't always contain additional weapons or equipment - some of them are just a joke. Locations are diverse - we fight, e.g. among the city streets, in the military base, and even visit an alien ship. The whole is filled with a controversial sense of humor, and our protagonist tends to comment on the current situation often and bluntly.

In addition to the rather typical firearms, the creators also gave us more interesting weapons, such as the Shrinker, which reduces enemies to the size of a worm, or the Freezer, which freezes enemies. Duke's equipment includes several interesting gadgets, such as steroids increasing the speed, or a hologram that distracts the opponents' attention. As a last resort, we can also simply kick the enemies.

One of the biggest novelties in the Megaton Eidtion version is the introduction of the User Clip function, which records our gameplay from the beginning to the end of a given level. In addition to the ability to share such a video with other players, it is an alternative to the traditional saving. If we happen to die in battle, we can simply go back to any place in the video and continue the fun from that point. In addition, the game follows how much we spent on each level and if we manage to beat the current record, we will be placed in the special player ranking.

Game modes

Another way to compete with live opponents is the so-called DukeMatch, the local equivalent of Deathmatch. However, if we want to cooperate with others, we can always go through the whole campaign in cooperation mode for up to eight people. Multiplayer modes allow for voice communication between players. We can also use a special function to select partners with similar skills.

Technical aspects

The graphics in Megaton Edition have only been slightly improved from the original version and are very similar to the game from years ago.
