Tinertia

An original platformer developed by Section Studios, inspired by a popular indie Super Meat Boy. In Tinertia, the players assume the role of Weldon – a small, but an uncanny robot who, together with his inseparable rocket launcher, for reasons unknown was imprisoned on a deserted island that is invaded by enemy forces known as ARC. To escape the trap, Weldon has to get through 65 levels, set in seven various environments, facing numerous challenges and seven robot bosses. The game is similar to other 2.5D platforming games – the only difference being that our protagonist doesn’t possess the ability to jump, which is one of the crucial elements in such a genre. During the game, Weldon can move freely around flat surfaces, but in order to jump and counter his opponents, he has to use his invaluable rocket launcher, using it to get a boost in the opposite direction – a technique known in popular online shooters such as Quake or Unreal Tournament as "rocket jump".

Tinertia for PlayStation 4 is an original platformer, inspired by an independent hitSuper Meat Boy, which is notable for lacking one of the characteristic elements of platform games – the ability to jump. The game is a result of a joint effort of two small American developers: debuting Clandescent Games, and Section Studios, known from a few interesting projects, such as Dead Realm or Vlad the Impaler.

Plot

Meet Weldon – a small, but an uncanny robot, with his inseparable rocket launcher. For unknown reasons, he has been imprisoned on a desert island, which is then invaded by enemy forces known as ARC. Since the protagonist cannot jump, the only way of getting by obstacles and enemies is a skillful use of the aforementioned rocket launcher. To escape this hazardous planet, Weldon has to get through more than 65 levels taking place in seven different environments (e.g. slums, factory, canals) and face numerous challenges and seven powerful robot bosses.

Mechanics

The game mixes the elements of the classic, dynamic platform games such as Sonic, with rocket jumps, a trademark of online shooters such as Quake, Unreal Tournament, or Team Fortress 2. Weldon can move around flat surfaces, but in order to jump or counter his enemies, he has to use his inseparable rocket launcher with unlimited ammo. This mechanic is greatly enhanced thanks to an advanced physics system, so a mastery of the platforming system (which is somewhat fortuitous at first) requires a healthy dose of practice. The control system takes advantage of two analog sticks – the left stick is used for movement, while the right one fires a rocket in the chosen direction.

Game Modes

Tinertia for PlayStation 4 is rather a single-player oriented title. However, the players can take part in a number of online challenges, fighting for a place on special internet ladders.

Technical Aspects

Tinertia employs true three-dimensional visuals, while the action is seen from a dynamic camera. However, similarly to classic platformers, Weldon moves only on a two-dimensional plane, with only exception being a complex replay system that allows repeating an action in slow-motion, and from any angle.
