Wartile for PC / Windows is a fantasy real-time strategy that combines the elements of board and card games. It is the first game developed by Playwood Project Aps, a studio established by Michael Rud Jakobsen, long-time employee of IO Interactive (he worked on Kane and Lynch 2: Dog Days). The game was firstly released on PC, and later, in 2016 on mobile platforms. Developers from Playwood Project Aps describhe their game as “chess without turns”.

The Plot

Wartile for PC / Windows takes place in a dark fantasy world inspired by the Norse mythology. We control a group of Vikings on a predatory expedition.

Mechanics

Gameplay in Wartile for PC / Windows focuses on real time battles. Each of our Vikings has their own strengths and weaknesses and taking advantage of them is one of the key factors in achievieng victory. Player built card decks are another important gameplay feature. Not only they power up our and buff our warriors, but they also activate defensive and offensive actions. More than often this will change the course of the battle. Cards also play an important role in exploration.

Combat takes place on three-dimensional maps divided into hexagonal tiles. As a result, they might look like they are turn-based, but they happen in real time. Combat difficulty is influenced not only by the variety of units, but also by the lay of the land. Units located on higher ground have advantage over those who are not. To win, we have to think strategically.

Game Modes

Wartile offers a story driven single player campaign and a multiplayer mode that can be played locally or through the Internet.

Technical Aspects

Wartile for PC / Windows uses Unreal Engine 4, which makes it visuals stand out among similar games. The game was designed so that it would resemble board games as much as possible. As a result, character models look like miniature figures or chess counters, and when they are defeated they shatter into pieces. Maps look like beautifully illustrated, cardboard layouts.
