Wartile

Wartile is an RTS with elements of card and board games. The game takes place in a dark fantasy world inspired by the Norse mythology. We control a party of vikings on a raid. Gameplay focuses on real-time battles between groups of warriors. Each of them has their own strengths and weaknesses, and the key to victory lies in taking advantage of them. Another important gameplay element is the deck of cards built by the players. Those cards will not only power up our warriors, but also activate both offensive and defensive actions. Cards also play an important role in exploration. Battles take place on three-dimensional maps that are divided into hexagonal tiles, and lay of the land, which is an important tactical element that should be taken under consideration when we are preparing our strategy. As a result, Wartile brings to mind a turn-based strategy that somehow takes place in real-time. Along with the story driven campaign Wartile offers a multiplayer mode. The game uses Unreal Engine 4.

Wartile for Apple iOS is a fantasy real-time strategy that combines elements of board and card games. It is the first game developed by Playwood Project Aps, a studio established by Michael Rud Jakobsen, long-time employee of IO Interactive (he worked on Kane and Lynch 2: Dog Days). The game was firstly released on PC, and later, in 2016 on mobile platforms. The developers from Playwood Project Aps describe their game as “chess without turns”.

The Plot

Wartile for Apple iOS takes place in a dark fantasy world inspired by the Norse mythology. We control a group of Vikings ransacking villages.

Mechanics

Gameplay in Wartile for Apple iOS focuses on real time battles. Each of our Vikings has their own strengths and weaknesses and taking advantage of them is one of the key factors in achieving victory. Player-built card decks are another important gameplay feature. Not only do they buff our warriors, but they also activate defensive and offensive actions. More than often this will change the course of the battle. Cards also play an important role in exploration.

Combat takes place on three-dimensional maps divided into hexagonal tiles. As a result, they might look as if they were turn-based, but they actually happen in real time. Combat difficulty is influenced not only by the variety of units, but also by the environment. Units located on higher ground have advantage over those who are not. To win, we have to think strategically.

Game Modes

Wartile offers a story driven single player campaign and a multiplayer mode that can be played locally or through the Internet.

Technical Aspects

Wartile for Apple iOS uses Unreal Engine 4, which makes it visuals stand out among similar games. The game was designed so that it would resemble board games as much as possible. As a result, character models look like miniature figures or chess counters, and when they are defeated they shatter into pieces. The graphics are beautiful and look like animated paper mâché models.
