DICETINY: The Lord of the Dice released on AND, iOS and PC is a digital board game with RPG and collectible card game elements. It was developed by independent Korean studio Fakedice that was founded in January 2015. The studio’s members intend to focus on creating games that are filled with humor and it is perfectly seen in their debut game.

Plot

The story of the game is a humoristic paraphrase of Lord of the Rings written by J. R. R. Tolkien. The plot of the game starts long ago in a realm called Middle-Board in which the ancient kings received magic dices called DICETINY from the gods. Three of them were given to elves, seven to dwarves and nine to humans. Not a single dice was given to gnomes who decided to agitate other races by peddling about a one unique dice that rules them all. As one can guess, this led to a great war that consumed many innocent lives.

Centuries later, when the magic dices are almost forgotten, two wise men accidentally found two of them. Soon later one of them, consumed by the DICETINY, proclaimed himself the Dead Serious and became a real threat to the whole modern world. The second man, who did not allowed the dice to influence his mind, decided to find the one dice that will allow him to control the remaining ones. He intends to use it to defeat the evil that threatens the world. Together with him the player goes to a small village in which the game starts.

Mechanics

The gameplay mechanics of DICENITY: The Lord of the Dice combines the elements of a few genres like board game, card game and classic RPG in a simple yet skillful way. The action takes place on few boards each of which challenges the players with different objectives. When starting the game, each player selects one of available races (humans, elves, dwarves or gnomes) and classes (warrior, cleric, mage or rogue). Each of the participants rolls a dice and then moves his character the number of squares he thrown. At the destination he will confront various random events such as monsters, traps, treasures or NPCs. With each of them one must deal by using cards from his deck that is gradually expanded as the game progresses. In addition to that, there are special fields in each of the four corners of the map – palace, temple, shop and city hall. There one can receive special blessing, heal his wounds, buy useful items, trade items found during the game or start various story quests.

Each time a hero makes a full loop through the board, he advances to higher experience level. This increases the level of encountered traps and monsters as well. The objective of the game is to complete enough quests and fully develop the controlled character so that he might face the powerful boss in the game finale. In difference to majority of board games, where acting against other players is recommended, in DICETINY the key to success lies in cooperation of all players, both when it comes to character development and fighting the enemy. The winner of the game is the player whose contribution to defeating the boss was the greatest. During the game one can die (this forces the player to pause for one turn), but when all players are defeated the game ends in automatic failure.

Game modes

As every digital board game, DICETINY is focused mostly on multiplayer modes in which up to four players can participate. Players who have no internet connection or friends willing to play with them can play alone with three other participants controlled by AI.

Technical aspects

DICETINY: The Lord of the Dice released on AND, iOS and PC has humoristic, hand-drawn graphics. The game is filled with large dose of humor due to which one can consider the game a pastiche.
