Battle Fleet 2: WW2 in the Pacific

Pacific Fleet for AND and iOS is a mobile strategy game developed by a Swedish-Australian indie studio Killerfish Games. It combines elements of turn-based strategy and a simple simulator, similarly to the first Silent Hunter games.

The Plot

The game takes place on the Pacific Ocean during World War II. We can lead the US Navy or the Imperial Japanese Navy to victory during the 1939-1945 conflict.

Mechanics

Pacific Fleet for AND and iOS offers a wide variety of units (seventeen types of ships and eight types of planes), which we unlock and acquire as we progress. We will fight on over one hundred locations, each of them set in the different region of the Pacific Ocean. Location of the particular units is completely random, and some variables like the weather conditions or day-night cycle visibly influence the course of our battles. Those battles are turn-based and, unlike in many other strategy games, the graphics are fully 3D. We can also control particular units, not just our entire fleet. Manual skills are just as important as strategic thinking if we want to be victorious.

Each player’s turn can be divided into two phases. In the first one, we set the course and movement speed of our ships. During the second one, we commence the attack. We decide about firing our cannons or torpedoes, dropping a bomb (while we control a flying unit), or submerging/emerging our submarine. Each of such actions must me tactically prepared and thought through, because it will take a given number of turns to finish, during wich our unit cannot attack.

Game Modes

Pacific Fleet for AND and iOS offers a single player campaign and a “hot seats” multiplayer mode.

Technical Aspects

Pacific Fleet for AND and iOS stands out among other mobile strategy games due to being fully 3D. Given the fact that this is a mobile game, its visuals are not as advanced as in the games on “bigger” platforms. At first sight it may seem a bit like a simulator game, but its many strategic aspects prevent it from being categorized as “arcade”.
