Megadimension Neptunia VII for PC and PS4 is another installment in a popular; though niche series of jRPGs whose characters personify Japanese consoles and development companies. The series has its origins in 2010 and was created by two studios - Compile Heart and Idea Factory. The franchise has been largely popular since its beginnings, and throughout only several years, it generated quite a few main installments, as well as many side follow-ups released for PCs and Sony's gaming systems. Megadimension Neptunia VII offers similar mechanics and utilizes the same engine Fairy Fencer F: Advent Dark Force and Omega Quintet are powered by – these games were created by Idea Factory as well.

Plot

The game's campaign was divided into three separate, non-connected episodes. Each of those presents a storyline set in the multiverse of the series. Apart from the characters the players are familiar with, completely new, playable ones and subsequent antagonists are introduced in particular sections of the story. In the episode entitled "Zero Dimension Game Neptune Z: Ragnarok of the Abyss Goddess", Neptune and her sister are taken to the mysterious Zero dimension, which has been plundered and destroyed by four evil goddesses. The storyline presented in Hyperdimension Game Neptune G: Gold Vanguard Gamindustri Existence of Change, is about a fighting tournament organized by the main characters. At the very ending, the tournament gets interrupted by unknown opponents that call themselves the Gold Third. They manage to defeat the main characters and take control over the countries governed by them. In Heart Dimension Game Neptune H on the other hand, the kingdoms of the goddesses fall victim to the invasion of monsters from the Zero dimension – they are commanded by Uzume Tennouboshi. The main characters decide to stop the monsters; on their path, they discover the truth behind Uzume's origins and the fate of her native dimension.

Mechanics

Megadimension Neptunia VII for PC and PS4 does not introduce any significant changes to the gameplay formula developed in the previous installments. The game represents classic jRPG patterns; it is turn-based and the duels take place on separate arenas. Only four characters directly take part in a fight, as the rest of them serve a supporting role, affecting the stats of the combatants. The player can move freely on the 3D arenas in every turn, and particular attacks have their range and field of activity assigned to them. The basic attacks are assigned to three buttons – depending in what order does the player push them, special combos can be executed. Certain characters can also undergo transformations, turning into a stronger, divine form. What is new in the series, is the additional, even stronger divine form, which is useful when fighting the most powerful opponents – now, they have parts of armor and weapons that can be destroyed by the player – doing so makes them both weaker and less effective during their attacks. An additional tactical element was introduced here as well, which emerges when encountering huge bosses.

Technical aspects

Although Megadimension Neptunia VII for PC and PS4 supports 1080p resolution, the game's visual quality has not changed since the PlayStation 3 era. The creators made use of many models and textures taken from the installments released for the previous-gen consoles, only here and there improving how the program works and adding new graphical effects.
