Afghanistan '11

An innovative turn-based strategy developed by Every Single Soldier and Retro Epic Software as a direct continuation to Vietnam ’65. Afghanistan ’11 offers the ability to take part in numerous famed events from the history of the conflict. We take control of the coalition forces that focus on gearing and training the Afghan security forces, as well as support the local communities through taking care of the infrastructure, creating water intakes, or distributing humanitarian aid. Aside from “hearts and minds” philosophy, our units often fall under enemy fire or are struck by IEDs, creating tough situations that have to be addressed with due attention. The game sports simple, warm visuals that offer fluid gameplay even on mobile platforms.

Afghanistan ’11 is an innovative turn-based strategy released for PCs and mobile platforms. The game, which is also an a direct descendant of Vietnam ’65, was developed by Every Single Soldier in cooperation with RetroEpic Software.

Plot

We are taken to Afghanistan following the 2001 intervention. The coalition forces take part in gearing and training the Afghan security forces that will be responsible for the security once the NATO forces complete their assignment in the country. Moreover, the peacekeeping forces direct their attention towards civilian infrastructure, including road building, creating water intakes in villages and towns, as well as safeguarding UN humanitarian aid. These actions are the basis of “hearts and minds” mechanic known from Vietnam ’65.

Mechanics

Similarly to the previous Every Single Soldier game, Afghanistan ’11 for PC / Windows focuses on the psychological side of the participating forces and the local civilians. This means that aside from military assignments that often see intense firefights, the player has to engage in peacekeeping actions that are aimed towards the safety of local communities. These include constructing utility buildings or safeguarding UNICEF humanitarian aid. We are left with a singleplayer campaign consisting of 18 missions that recreate the events from the establishing of Camp Rhino, up to operation Neptune Spear – the assault on Osama Bin Laden’s compound.

The game enables us to assume control of either US Army or Afghan security forces during a number of air and land operations. The coalition forces can use drones, multi-purpose or close air support aircraft, or recon units that enable us to reveal enemy positions. Moreover, we are left with a wide range of modern military units, including artillery, infantry, mechanized formations, engineers, or helicopters, while the world is influenced by random events, such as presidential elections that influence the game directly by changing the Afghanistan’s political scene.

Technical Aspects

The visuals are simple and satisfying to a large degree, achieving fluid gameplay on both PCs and mobile devices. In opposition to Vietnam ’65, the developers had introduced certain changes to the graphic engine, including three-dimensional landforms.

System requirements

Minimum: Intel Core 2 Duo 2 GHz, 2 GB RAM, graphic card 512 MB GeForce 8800 or better, 200 MB HDD, Windows 7/8/10
