Syrian Warfare

A tactical real-time strategy, taking place during the civil war in modern Syria. The game skips some of the typical RTS elements, such as resource gathering and base development. Instead, the main emphasis was placed on tactical maneuvers of land and air forces – including building assaults, using smoke grenades, air drops, air strikes, etc. Before each mission, we need to choose adequate units, with only occasional support from allied units during the mission. Your units stay with you throughout the missions, gathering battle experience. The game incorporates a very realistic unit damage model – instead of energy bars, the level of damage is reflected by the appearance of our units. Syrian Warfare focuses solely on the single player campaign. The game is seen from the usual isometric view, with full 3D visuals.

Syrian Warfare for PC / Windows is a tactical real-time strategy, based on the ongoing conflict in Syria. The game was developed by Cats Who Play, a Russian independent studio which debuted in 2008 with an action-adventure game Fairytales: Three Heroes.

Plot

The action of the game takes us to modern Syria, the Middle-Eastern Arabian republic where a civil war ravages the country for many years, taking its toll on the civilian populace. The game developed by Cats Who Play is an attempt to direct the public attention towards the Syrian conflict. While new tragic news from the country have become bread and butter of the news stations, Europe and the rest of the world mainly equate the problem with the incoming waves of immigrants. The game recalls the beginning of the conflict, showing a brutal reality of war, not from a point of view of a general, but a simple citizen, who has to fight for his life and freedom.

Gameplay

Syrian Warfare doesn’t contain many elements that are synonymous with the RTS genre, such as resource gathering and base development, with the whole game focusing on tactical maneuvers of land and air forces. Before each mission, we need to choose troops adequate to our objective, with only periodic support from our forces – similarly to Company of Heroes or Men of War series. At the same time, our units can follow our lead from mission to mission, acquiring battle experience which makes them more effective during combat. The trophies acquired in the game also work in the same manner – we can use them throughout the whole story campaign.

The game is characterized by an unusual, but at the same time realistic damage model. The authors gave up the typical unit energy bars, in favor of a more complicated system. The damage dealt to vehicles is constantly calculated based on a few factors, finally leading to their immobilization. During combat, the units can be repaired, but the player needs to take under advisement the fact that fuel and ammo supplies, as well as spare parts, are very scarce. The game places a huge emphasis on the tactical aspect, allowing the players to apply various tactics, such as attacks on buildings, using smoke grenades, the ability to transport infantry using air units, air strikes, or taking over enemy weapons.

Game Modes

Syrian Warfare on PC / Windows focuses solely on the singleplayer campaign, and doesn’t include any multiplayer modes.

Technical Aspects

Syrian Warfare for PC / Windows employs decent 3D visuals, similar to what we can see in most of the present-day real-time strategies. The game is seen from a nearly genre-defining isometric view. The destroyable environment also deserves a mention, as it’s not only a visual aspect, but can also impact the course and the tactics of the gameplay.
