MLB: The Show 17 for PS4 is the twelfth installment of baseball simulator series developed by Sony and SIE San Diego (initially known as SCE San Diego). The series, begun in 2005 with a PlayStation 2 title, uses the license of Major League Baseball, the most renowned baseball organization in North America, with a number of professional teams from both USA and Canada. MLB: The Show 17 is the first entry in the series dedicated exclusively to PlayStation 4, as in opposition to the previous years, the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita releases were discontinued.

Mechanics

The basic idea of MLB: The Show 17 hasn’t been changed or interfered with in any way – we are looking at an extensive baseball simulator with a number of managerial features. The authors hadn’t modified the controls or gameplay rules in any way, however we’ve received certain updates regarding the course of the match and small technical details, such as behavior of the ball or the way the player statistics are portrayed.

Game Modes

We are left with numerous game modes, from single matches up to whole seasons. The campaign sees us choose a team, and make certain decisions regarding the choice of the players, their training, or transfers. Similarly to the previous installments, the player statistics are updated online, according to the official MLB 2017/2018 database. The biggest novelty in the game is the Retro mode, which is offering streamlined and arcade gameplay inspired by baseball games from 8 bit and 16 bit consoles, as well as a new interface and soundtrack. As always, we are left with a number of multiplayer modes.

Technical Aspects

Thanks to the discontinuation of the seventh generation releases, the developers were able to focus on improving graphics, including animation, character models, or special effects. PlayStation 4 Pro users received access to additional graphical features.
