Neighborhorde is a twin-stick shooter developed by an indie studio called Fermenter Games that also created other minimalistic games, e.g. Spingun and David which focuses on physics. The game is available on various platforms, such as PC, PS4 and XONE. This time the developers were inspired by cartoons from 1990's, e.g. Ed, Edd & Eddy or Calvin and Hobbes.

Plot

Even though the story in Neighborhorde plays a secondary role, the developers added a lot of specific humor to it. During the game we play as anthropomorphic animals. Their mothers aren't happy with the fact that their children spend too much time on video games. The mothers send their children outside but they don't know that, behind the doors, there are such dangers as evil robots, sorcerers, zombie and even dragons that got here by a recently opened portal. The children have to defeat them before dusk because when that happens, they will have to go back home for their bedtime story.

Mechanics

The action in Neighborhorde, released on PC, PS4 and XONE, is presented from a top-down perspective. During the gameplay we focus on eliminating hordes of enemies by using more than 40 types of weapons and the same amount of battle skills. Of course, we don't have access to all of them when we start the game – we get new weapons by surviving through the levels. Sometimes, heroes can come across boxes that contain unique and powerful equipment.

Our heroes become progressively more and more powerful – however, the same goes for their enemies, among which we can find very strong bosses. We can face them when we survive three days in a row. The key to success is to cooperate with other team members – if we stay within, so called, Friendzone we can receive various bonuses that increase our battle potential.

Game modes

Neighborhorde can be played alone (our companions are controlled by an artificial intelligence) or with other players – the multiplayer mode allows us to play both locally and online.

Technical aspects

Similarly to the previous games made by Fermenter Games, Neighborhorde, available on PC, PS4 and XONE, uses minimalistic graphics – the game features a soundtrack inspired by music hits from 1990's. An interesting fact about this game – it was created in Gamemaker: Studio program.
