Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories

GTA: Liberty City Stories

A spin-off to the iconic Grand Theft Auto series. The game was first developed for the PlayStation Portable handheld console. The story of Liberty City Stories takes place a few years before the events shown in GTA3, on the streets of the same metropolis. During the game player becomes Tony Cipriani who after coming to the city is caught up in the dirt of corruption, mafia wars, and drug traffic. The objective of the game is to work for the Leone mafia family, increase its influences and build up Tony’s reputation in the criminal underworld. The gameplay of GTA: Liberty City Stories employs the well-received mechanics of the series and offers an open world filled with story missions and side activities alike. As always in the series, there are many vehicles (including motorcycles, motorboats, trains and ferries) and weapons to use. However, due to the limitations of the PSP console, some things were slightly simplified.

Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories for PlayStation Portable is another installment of the famous action games series launched back in 1998, released on many different platforms (PC, PS2, Xbox, and others). The title is the first one in the franchise to be available for the PlayStation Portable handheld console, PlayStation 2 as well as iOS- and Android-powered mobile devices. Naturally, the production was developed by Rockstar Games, a studio well-known for all the enthusiasts of gaming industry.

Story

As the title suggests, we revisit Liberty City which we have roamed in Grand Theft Auto III. We arrive at the metropolis several years before the events of GTA III take place and assume the role of Toni Cipriani. We are slowly caught up in the swamp of mafia feuds, corruption, drug trade, and so on. Generally, we work for the Leone family; to make its influence grow, we have to cope not only with hostile gangsters but also with politicians, businessmen, and even the protagonist’s own mother. We are given different missions personally by the bosses or by phone. Of course, we can perform additional missions (stunt jumps, collecting hidden packages, etc.), as well, and make some extra money as a taxi driver, policeman, ambulance driver, or a firefighter.

Gameplay

As usual, the developers prepared a myriad of various cars that we can drive. Moreover, the game also offers motorcycles, motorboats, trains, and ferries. There are also lots of weapons (handgun, grenades, assault rifle, etc.) to choose from in the famous Ammu-Nation stores so we are not defenseless in numerous confrontations. It is also noteworthy that Liberty City is comprised of three vast districts located on separate islands. We will also notice architectural differences that are supposed to reflect the time gap between the events of Liberty City Stories and Grand Theft Auto III.

Technicalities

Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories for PlayStation Portable is powered by a completely new graphics engine (Rockstar Games previously used the Renderware technology) developed to utilize all the capabilities of the PSP and PS2 in terms of generating three-dimensional visuals. The game also offers an atmospheric audio layer comprised of many licensed music tracks, suggestive sound effects, and perfectly matched character voices – the protagonist is voiced-over by Michael Madsen known from, for example, Reservoir Dogs directed by Quentin Tarantino.

Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories for Apple iOS is a mobile reedition of the spin-off installment of the cult sandbox action games series. Initially, it was released in 2005 as a PlayStation Portable exclusive, then ported to PlayStation 2 the following year. Naturally, the new version was developed by a team at Rockstar, the creators of the original from a decade ago.

Plot

The story is set in the fictional Liberty City which, in fact, is a virtual reconstruction of New York. The events take place in 1998, three years before those known from Grand Theft Auto III. The main protagonist of Liberty City Stories is a gangster called Toni Cipriani, one of the characters we could work for in the memorable GTA III. Once forced to flee, he returns to the streets of Liberty City years after to renew his cooperation with a gentleman by the name of Salvatore and help him rebuild his criminal empire to consequently make his family take control over the city again. The protagonist is opposed by other mafia families, the Columbians, Yakuza as well as less significant local gangsters.

Gameplay

As far as gameplay mechanics are concerned, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories for Apple iOS is a rather faithful conversion of the solutions known from GTA III. In the game, we explore the open world, both on foot and by various vehicles, and perform numerous missions, of which many are entirely optional. Compared to GTA III, the developers added several new elements such as motorcycles, helicopters, and the possibility of changing clothing or entering buildings. At the same time, some features were cut out, these include climbing or swimming.

Technical aspects

As a game initially developed with the PSP portable console In mind, Liberty City Stories for Apple iOS-powered devices works good in mobile conditions. Since modern smartphones and tablets significantly exceed state-of-the-art platforms of the past decade in terms of technical capabilities, the developers did not settle for a simple conversion. The mobile reedition boasts better, high-resolution graphics that runs smoothly at 60 frames-per-second. Moreover, we can enjoy sharper textures, more detailed character models, and an increased draw distance. Contrary to the original for PlayStation Portable, which offered a multiplayer mode for the first time in the history of the series, the mobile Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories — similarly to the PlayStation 2 version — is meant only for single player gameplay.
