Counter-Strike: Source is an enhanced edition of one of the best-received modern first-person shooters. Originally, the game was supposed to be just a large modification to the first installment of the famous Half-Life series. Having achieved a huge success, the program was released in a boxed edition, and the game received multiple conversions, including the Xbox version. Counter-Strike: Source introduces mainly visual changes, while retaining the original mechanics.

Mechanics

The game’s rules are pretty clear. Of course, the Source edition is in accord with the original version. You take part in skirmishes between two teams. The player can side either with terrorists or a special unit trained to fight them. The choice of either side is essential, as each has unique gear and weapons at their disposal. Authors of the Source version have retained all items from the game’s previous editions. It is noteworthy that some items are limited to a specific team. For example, only terrorists can arm themselves with the popular Kalashnikov rifle. Apart from traditional weapons you can also use grenades and even explosive materials.

In order to be able to equip your character with such items you must earn money. All gear must be bought in a dedicated store. The variety of game modes offered in Counter-Strike: Source is pretty large, and includes e.g. saving hostages or planting bombs. In each of those the two teams’ objectives are mutually exclusive, thus forcing players to compete.

Technical aspects

The Source version differs from the original mainly when it comes to the enhanced visuals. The game runs on Source engine, which was first used in the second installment in the aforementioned Half-Life series. The upgrades are mainly evident in the appearance of locations. What is interesting, Counter-Strike: Source includes all the maps from the original Counter-Strike. Moreover, the authors offered many other interesting features. For example, throwing a stun grenade at an enemy (if successful) may cause a blur effect. Another noteworthy thing is the improved physics engine, which contains, among other features, the fan favorite rag doll effect. The boxed edition of Counter-Strike: Source also offers Day of Defeat: Source and Half-Life 2: Deathmatch.
