The Legacy of Goku for GBA is a two-dimensional action game with role-playing elements that is based directly on Dragon Ball, popular manga and anime series. During the game, the player assumes the role of Goku, revealing events from the second season of the Dragon Ball series. At the beginning, we are trying to free Gothan, the protagonist’s son, from the hands of evil Raditz. Then, we enter the nether world to the King Kai’s planet. Following the further events, we return to Earth to do battle with Nappa and Vegeta, and fly to Namek to fight vicious Friezer.

Gameplay

Mainly, the gameplay consists of fighting numerous enemies and exploration of the available areas (16 levels). As a variation, we gather items, and talk or barter with neutral characters (about 75 characters from the Dragon Ball universe). Before the last battle, we’ll need to complete 26 quests, mainly focusing on the actions described above. Our hero can hit with his fists, fly, and use energy attacks (normal fireball, Solar Flare which blinds opponents, and a powerful Kamehameha). Every win nets experience points to our hero. A level-up means increased power and stronger abilities.

Technical Aspects

The visuals practically scream out the name “Dragon Ball”. Locations have different color palettes and are filled with details. The game uses sprites for character models and animations. Music and other sound effects have been practically lifted from the TV show (characteristic song in the background, same speeches made by the characters).
