In accordance with its name, WRC 3 is the third installment in the racing game series based on the World Rally Championship license under the aegis of FIA. The game has been developed by seasoned members of the Italian Milestone Studios.

The game is based on the official license of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile and allows players to participate in the virtual version of the World Rally Championship – top level car racing competition. The annual championship comprises over a dozen rounds, each one featuring 3 days of races located in different parts of the world.

Mechanics

Because of the aforementioned license, the developers were able to implement into the game all the tracks, teams, drivers and cars that were present during the 2012 WRC season. In comparison to the previous series’ installments, the tracks’ beds are now much more realistic and better looking. The tracks themselves have been narrowed, which results in the game’s higher difficulty level. Moreover, WRC 3 introduces drifting contests and the so-called ‘gate-crasher’ races, in which a player has to drive through a number of sponge blocks set on the track. For each block a player manages to hit, he is awarded a certain amount of points.

In the career mode, a player will not experience an elaborate managing panel. This does not mean, however, that a player is not able to modify his vehicles in a dedicated garage. Other changes have affected the conditions of unlocking new races – a player receives points for both his position at the finish line and his driving style. The number of points gathered determines the following steps within a career mode.

Technical aspects

The PC, PS3 and etc. release of WRC 3 is based on the Spikengine graphics engine that allowed developers to represent the in-game models in better detail (this mostly regards the spectators seen in the background) and implement improved lighting effects.
