Max Payne

Max Payne is a third-person perspective action game developed by the Finnish studio Remedy Entertainment. The protagonist is an undercover DEA agent whose task is to locate the source of Valkyr - a deadly new drug. Personally, Max is also seeking revenge against the murderers of his family. He falls victim to a conspiracy and gets accused of killing his supervisor. The creators were inspired by the crime stories from the 1940s and 1950s, Pulp novels, and the movie, The Matrix. The gameplay focuses on very dynamic sequences of spectacular shootings. An innovative gameplay mechanism is the bullet-time effect which allows the player to slow down the passage of time for a short while in order to perform quick movements, such as jumps or dodges.

Max Payne for PC / Windows is an innovative third person shooter game created as a result of cooperation between Remedy and 3D Realms teams. We play as a secret agent hunted by every secret service agency that exists, after he was accused of killing his supervisor. Seeking revenge against the murderers of his family, he plunges into the midst of New York's crime world. There is plenty of dark figures Max has to deal with: ruthless murderers, drug addicts, bent cops, corrupt politicians and a set of other individuals encountered in the terrifyingly realistic three-dimensional scenery.

Max Payne for PC / Windows is a fruit of the drive to create new qualities of a good third person perspective action game. Having a revolutionary combat system, the game has an atmosphere of a film. Here is where the creators' inspirations come from - dark crime stories from the 50s. They were also inspired by Pulp novels and Hollywood blockbusters, especially The Matrix.

Story

The complex story in Max Payne for PC / Windows gradually reveals its secrets to the player as Max descends deeper into the dark. His goals are to clean his name and find the truth behind conspiracy and treachery.

A new synthetic drug called Valkyr spreads around New York like a plague, leaving piles of corpses behind. Valkyr gives a drive to kill - a junkie's veins are getting filled with burning hatred. For Drug Enforcement Agency, Valkyr is the embodiment of evil, because it makes people want to destroy things and others.

DEA special agent Max Payne is the most appropriate person for the job of tracking and destroying the sources of the drug by any means necessary. As a man torn apart by the horrible events from his past when his family was murdered by gang members under the influence of Valkyr, Max Payne is a man ready to put his life on the line in order to destroy the deadly drug. Disguised, he has to infiltrate the New York mafia responsible for distribution of the drug. Entering the underground of most dangerous criminals, Max tries to uncover and defeat the drug empire on his own, paying no attention to the possible consequences. When Max's supervisor gets killed, the story takes a sharp turn for he was the only person aware of Max's mission and its objective. Still, as an undercover agent, Max gets framed for a murder and becomes a cop killer on the run.

Once his identity is uncovered, Max performs a desperate escape into the shadows of New York. Driven by madness, he promises himself that he will avenge his family, punish the people who set him up and destroy the source of Valkyr. Max Payne is ready to go through hell in order to bring this nightmare to the ultimate end.

Technology

  • Diversity of city buildings - from areas littered with industrial waste, to rich districts with luxurious apartments. All these environments are extremely detailed.
  • Remedy's three-dimensional graphic engine ensures the highest level of details and great lighting effects. Character movements are more fluent now and facial expressions are describable. Clothes are also subject to movement.
  • 3D Acceleration (MAX-FX), detail designs, particular effects and character animations make the game world smooth and lively at the same time.
  • Movement seems natural even at a close distance. Face animations actually express emotions.
  • Slow motion sequences are a unique feature of the game. Not only do they make the game resemble a movie, but they also create a magnificent visual effect, when the player can observe his bullets penetrating bodies of the enemies.
  • Combat sequences combined with the unfolding story resemble an action film made in Hong Kong. Max is capable of dodging enemy bullets and shooting at his enemies simultaneously.
  • Weapons behave in realistic manner (flash fire coming out of the barrel when shooting, bullets bouncing off the walls). Consequences of getting hit bring realism to the gameplay as well, for example, when Max takes a bullet to his leg, he starts limping and bleeding. A shot in the stomach will usually mean Max's death, but before it happens, the player watches a bullet penetrating his body in slow motion.

Nice visuals, a good story set in New York of today, an atmospheric representation of mafia, and corrupt police officers - those are the reasons behind the success achieved by Max Payne for PlayStation 2. However, the game owes the most of its glory to the bullet-time effect which allows the player to slow down the passage of time, and still be able to aim and shoot freely.

In Max Payne for PlayStation 2, leaping from around a corner or a wardrobe and shooting in slow motion at the same time looks really impressive. It is an action console game at its core. The story revolve around the protagonist's revenge for his family's death, which was an event he almost witnessed himself. A series of unfortunate events and Max's persistence both result in him being hunted not only by the mafia, but also by the police. Max's main goal is to catch the murderers of his family. Both the well-paced storytelling and the entire revenge theme being nicely interwoven into the story itself make the player want to punish the bad guys himself. There is a wide set of weapons available, although it is the standard weaponry one may expect to find in such a game. There are pistols, shotguns, rapid-fire weapons, grenades etc. However, shootings were never as spectacular as they seem to be in Max Payne for PlayStation 2. To improve the atmosphere, the creators dressed Max up in a leather jacket that moves when Max is performing a dodge in the air. It is also worth to mention the atmospheric New York filthy locations, suggestive sounds and a lot of brutality.

2001's Max Payne was one of the more innovative and mechanically joyful third person shooters. The game was first meant to be played on PC, but console versions were also created over time. Interestingly, apart from PS2 an XBOX versions, a Game Boy Advance version was also released. In many aspects, the game resembles the original experience - spectacular shootings are at the core of the gameplay here as well. This mobile version of the classic game was created by Mobius Entertainment, a team responsible for NDS games such as Army Men: Turf War or Drome Racers. Max Payne for Game Boy Advance is a singleplayer game only.

The story in Max Payne for Game Boy Advance is rooted in the original game. Thus we play as a NYPD cop seeking revenge against the murderers of his family. At the same time, the protagonist is hunted by the police whom he must avoid at all cost. The story in Max Payne for Game Boy Advance is divided into three parts containing twelve extensive chapters in total. Each chapter is a different map. The player receives a certain number of lives - running out of them will mean starting the entire chapter over. Unfortunately, the story is rather short, but as a reward for completing it, the player unlocks additional game modes, such as time attack.

The action is viewed in the isometric perspective. The cop the player controls goes through a series of spectacular gun fights. The bullet-time effect is present in this version as well, which allows the player to slow the passage of time for a moment. The player can perform impressive shootdodges in the air which makes it easier not to get hit. The visuals are excellent - this is vividly visible especially when using the bullet-time effect. The players can count on many special effects as well. The model of the protagonist is well-made. Additionally, characters the player encounters are significantly bigger on the screen than in most shooters released on Game Boy Advance.

Max Payne Mobile for Apple iOS is a remake of a classic third person shooter for mobile devices. The original game was developed by Remedy and released in 2001 on PCs and the sixth generation of consoles. The initiative was taken by Rockstar Games. Max Payne Mobile was developed by War Drum, the studio that previously worked also on mobile Grand Theft Auto versions.

Story

In Max Payne Mobile for Apple iOS the player takes control over an ex-cop trying to catch the gang members who murdered his family. When he finds out that the killers were under the influence of a drug called Valkyr, Max gets framed for a murder of a DEA agent Alex Balder, who was his friend. From now on, Max visits filthy subway stations, hotels and suspicious night clubs hiding from the cops and trying to discover the truth behind the brutal murder of his family and the entire drug business.

Max Payne Mobile for Apple iOS stands out among other TPSs with its original way of storytelling and atmosphere of dark crime stories from the 1950s. Cutscenes accompanying the gameplay depict memories of the protagonist and have stylistics of a comic strip. One of the most significant features of the game is the bullet-time effect inspired by The Matrix film. When activated, it slows down the passage of time so the player can watch his bullets coming out of the barrel for example. This effect has become an inherent part of many action games developed since Remedy implemented it first in Max Payne.

Technical aspects

In comparison to the original game, Max Payne Mobile for Apple iOS stands out with the improved HD visuals including sharper textures. Movement was re-designed to match the specifics of mobile devices, offering its customization possibility and several aiming modes that were not present in the original game. The players can compete against each other for better scores and receive bonus in-game contents because the game is synchronized with Rockstar Games Social Club.

Max Payne Mobile was developed by War Drum, the studio behind the well-received mobile version of Grand Theft Auto III.

Story

In Max Payne Mobile for Android OS the player takes control over a cop trying to catch the gang members who murdered his wife and daughter under the influence of a mysterious drug. Moreover, Max gets framed for a murder of a DEA agent who was his friend. This draws the attention of every NYPD cop in New York City, including Jim Bravura. Because of his personal tragedy, the haunted Max escapes deep into the crime world to search for the mafia members involved in drug peddling.
