Syberia II

A sequel to the excellent adventure game created by Benoit Sokal and studio Microids. Syberia II continues the plot of the first installment - it presents the further adventures of Kate Walker, an American lawyer. Her intention of finalizing a contract led her to the adventure of her life. The game starts in the same place where the first Syberia ended – in the Russian city Romansburg. This time Kate decides to follow the trail of Hans Voralberg, the heir to an automaton factory, for her own reasons. The woman joins Hans and she helps him discover the mystery of the last living Mammoths. The greatest change in comparison to the first game lies in the quality of the graphics and the increase of the gameplay dynamics. Many new graphic effects were added, including dynamic shadows and an animated snow. Syberia II takes place in completely new locations that are much more different from each other than previously. During her adventures Kate will visit, among other places, the North-West passage and the village of the Youkol people.

The sequel to Syberia – a well known title and one of the best adventure games of all-times. All video game media dubbed it the best adventure game of 2002. The scenario of Syberia II for PC / Windows was written, similarly as its predecessor, by a Belgian writer and artist Benoit Sokal, who also participated in the development of the title.

Plot

The story of the second Syberia for PC / Windows continues the events described in the first installment – Sokal himself admits that at first, there was a single tale that split into two parts: Syberia and Syberia II. The action starts where the first game ended, in the Russian city Romansbourg. In this installment the main characters are Kate and Hans who are accompanied by the mechanical Oscar. This time Kate decides to follow Hans only because of her personal reasons and she lives behind her family matters, work etc. She becomes his companions and she helps him uncover the mystery of the mammoths.

Misc.

The greatest change in comparison to the first installment – except for the story – is the quality of the graphics. The game became much livelier and the gameplay dynamics were increased. Many new graphics effects were added, including dynamic shadows and animated snow. The action takes place in completely new locations (mostly in open space) and the surroundings aren’t as empty as before. There are more people and side characters to encounter (including more than 25 humans and 10 animals). There are more dramatic scenes as well. The game also explains many of the unresolved plots from the first title in the series. Syberia II for PC / Windows takes place in four locations. The first one is the city of Romansbourg and then the story leads the protagonists to a location called the Great North Passage. The third location is the Youkol village and the last one is Syberia itself.

The first Syberia quickly gained the sympathy of the players all over the world. However, the adventures of Kate Walker are not over yet. In contrast to the first installment of the series, the Xbox version of Syberia II was developed simultaneously with the PC version.

Plot

Syberia II for Xbox presents the direct continuation of the events known from the first entry in the series. The game starts in the Russian city of Romansbourg. Once again the player must find Hans Voralberg. However, this time Kate is following his trail only for personal reasons. She no longer wants to return to her old life, family problems and boring job. All that lost meaning to her. Together with Hans she wants to solve the mystery of the mammoths. In difference to the first installment of the series, this time the player journeys to the north. The story shown in the game solves many of previously unresolved plots.

Mechanics

Syberia II for Xbox contains many varied riddles to solve and mysteries waiting for discovering. The difficulty of the game was balanced so that both the beginners and experienced users can encounter many challenges. During the journey, the player will visit places like a monastery, Youkol village, a realm of dreams and the titular Syberia. Most of the new locations are open. As the events progress, the player learns more about the protagonists and the message of the game. The scenario of the second installment of the series was created, similarly as the one for the first game, by the renowned Belgian screenwriter and artist Benoit Sokal.

Technical aspects

The game presents high quality visuals. The graphics engine of Syberia II for Xbox uses a dynamic lightning and shadow system and it presents fluent animations of characters, snow, fog etc. The game also contains new cutscenes. All the fictional locations were created with details and they look as if they could exist in the real world. Each character and animal has its own personality. One can interact with the encountered individuals. The game has a climatic soundtrack as well.

A mobile re-edition of Syberia II, a title that was released in 2004. It was a very well received sequel to one of the best adventure games of all time. The scenario of the game – similarly as the one for the first game – was written by Belgian artist Benoit Sokal, and the title was very popular both on PC and sixth generation’s consoles. The Android OS version of the title was refreshed by the French company Anuman Interactive.

Plot

The story of the second Syberia for Android OS continues the events described in the first entry in the series because the scenario of both games was at first created as one, large story. The game starts where the previous title ended, in the Russian city Romansburg. Later in the game the player will visit completely new locations like the Great North Passage, the village of Jukoli, a penguin island and the titular Syberia that is filled with ice.

The main protagonists of the game are Kate and Hans who are accompanied by the mechanical Oscar. Kate leaves her family matters and job behind and she follows the trail of Hans. This time she is filled with lust for adventures and is motivated by her personal needs. The main story of the game resolves around the mystery of the mammoths, but during the game many unresolved plots from the previous title will be finished as well.

Mechanics

In comparison to the first game in the series, the gameplay in Syberia II for Android OS has become more dynamic. Small changes were made in the graphics as well – dynamic shadows and animated snow were introduced. The game takes place mostly in open areas and the surroundings became much more detailed and less empty than before. During the game the player will encounter more non-playable characters (including more than 25 humans and 10 animals). There are more dramatic scenes as well.

Technical aspects

Similarly as in case of the first game in the series, the Android OS version of Syberia II is almost a direct copy of the original that was released a decade earlier. The developers wanted to recreate the specific atmosphere of the original title and the majority of changes was limited to interface and controls modifications.
