Dragon's Crown is a two-dimensional cRPG game that creatively combines the features of fighting games, platformers and RPGs in the sign of magic and sword. The title was created by the Japanese Vanillaware studio, known for producing very warmly acclaimed games by the critics of Odin Sphere and Muramasa: The Demon Blade, which stood out with rich and original 2D graphics.

Story

In Dragon's Crown, the player takes on the role of a hero looking for fame and riches, who, together with his companions, treasure hidden deep in the underground labyrinth. In order to reach their desired destination, they will have to go through forgotten ruins and discover the lying places of dangerous creatures.

Mechanics

At the very beginning of the game, as in any standard RPG, we choose one of the six available characters: an elfe, a dwarf, a warrior, an Amazon, a magician or a sorceress. Each of them has its own unique abilities and uses different tactics. For example, when playing with an ellipsis, we must pay close attention to the number of arrows in our quiver, which we gain by touching our dead enemies. In turn, when choosing a warrior, we will use his speed and strength, as well as a large shield, which will block most of the blows we are targeting.

All locations in the game are two-dimensional and, just like in the battles known from the game rooms, we can move in them only in two directions - right or left. Thanks to this solution, the control is extremely simple and the gameplay is fast and intense. On our way we will come across many opponents, who need to apply various combat strategies. The real challenge, however, is the multistage battles with bosses who can fill the whole screen and knock down our alter ego with one blow. Importantly, during our adventures in the labyrinth, we will also meet friendly creatures and people who have different kinds of tasks for us. By doing so, we gain unique equipment and experience.

Dragon's Crown allows you to have fun together in cooperation mode for up to four people, and this is the game mode with the greatest emphasis. The creators made sure that the players' characters complement each other and help each other during the exploration of the underground. For example, when we lose weapons during a battle, we will have to fight in close combat until someone with the ability to steal in our team gets a new weapon. When we die, after just a dozen or so seconds we return to the game in the same place where we were defeated, but when all team members lose their lives, we appear together with them in the city and we have to start the adventure again. Communication with other players takes place only by means of gestures and short information left after the death of the character. If we are connected to Dragon's Crown servers, during our voyages, both in single and multiplayer mode, we will occasionally come across the bodies of fallen heroes from other sessions of the game. The body can be brought to the city and after paying the appropriate fee, the fallen character can be resurrected as an assistant controlled by the AI, thanks to which we will increase our chances in combat and gain a faithful companion. Also after our death, the body of a hero controlled by us will randomly appear in someone else's game and can be used there.

Technical issues

The game's graphic design, which is characteristic of Vanillaware production, brings to mind an animated illustrated children's book or a cut-out. Stylized character designs and fairy-tale scenography make Dragon's Crown offer graphics that are hard to find within the genre.

For the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita versions, both editions work together and allow you to play together in multiplayer mode.
