Alien: Isolation is first person survival horror game set in the world of movies form Alien series. It was created by British studio Creative Assembly, known especially for great strategies from Total War series, and it was published by SEGA which was owner of license for games in the unvierse with xenomorphs for many years.
We play as Amanda – daughter of Ellen Ripley, the main character from Alien movies. The story takes places 15 years after events of first movie (1979). The protagonist is searching for the black box from the spacecraft Nostromo which was arena for the first encounter with Alien. She wants to know the truth and to find out what happened with her mother. In her journey she joins a group sent by corporation Weyland-Yutani to space station Sevastopol which may hide some information. It turns out that station is paralyzed and terrorized by hunting xenomorph, among other things.
Unlike previous games on Alien licensce which were full of action, Creative Assembly returned to the roots of the survival horror genre. Developer focused not on combat but on on thrilling atmosphere and constant feeling of danger during the exploration of Sevastopol. We are being hunted by deadly foe ecquipped with very sensitive system of senses: sight, hearing and smell. We cannot kill the xenomorph so have to survive with running, hiding and using distraction. Amanda has to hack station’s systems, gather resources and craft tools and weapons. Particularly useful is tool well known from movies and previous games – motion tracker which warn us of upcoming threat.
Developer took inspirations mainly from first movie – Alien directed by Ridley Scott in 1979. Alien: Isolation replicates in story and graphics (it can be seen especially in the retrofuturistic look of interiors of ships and stations). When creators were modelling the xenomorph they used concepts of H. R. Giger himself. Developer managed to catch the atmosphere of the movie, with strong emotions caused by wandering through the maze of dark corridors and listening to mysterious sounds being possible mark of Alien’s presence instead of fighting hordes of monsters.
