The game features three playable characters, as well as various weapons and vehicles.

In Battlefield 1942 you take control of soldiers from one of the five countries fighting in the war. The character you control can assume one of five classes – Scout, Assault, Anti-Tank, Medic, and Engineer. The game offers 35 vehicles – starting with armored vehicles and tanks, through fighters and bombers, ending with different kinds of warships.
