Video Games Encyclopedia by Gamepressure.com

PC (Personal computer) - one of the most popular home platforms and the only one which doesn’t offer playing video games as its main purpose. PC was born in the 1970s, but it is impossible to give an exact moment of its birth or even a name of its creator. However, IBM is the one who gave computers their present shape, using, at the beginning of the 1980s, an idea of open architecture – which is today one of the most important differences between computers and consoles.

The foundations of PC as a gaming platform are currently systems of digital distribution of video games (Steam, Origin, Uplay) and MMO games that mostly work in f2p (free-to-play) model.

Strategy 07 December 2017

The third installment in a fantasy game series launched in 2003, which combines elements of RTS and RPG. The title was produced by Grimlore Games, a studio founded by the series’ publisher, which employs some of creators of the first two SpellForce games. Story-wise, SpellForce 3 is a prequel to the previous titles. It is set in times, when this fantasy world was still a vast, unified continent. This obviously affected the structure of locations, which are no longer solitary islands connected by portals. In terms of gameplay mechanics, the developers used the well-proven solutions making up a strategy game, in which you build a base, recruit army, and fight battles. At the same time, the strategic gameplay is enriched with the addition of such elements as heroes of different classes and skills, a character progression system, and story-driven missions with subquests – like in a classic RPG. The game features also multiplayer gameplay available through the Spellforce.net online platform.

In Destiny 2, we will visit completely new, enormous locations (i.e. Saturn alone will be bigger than the entire first game), finding new, vibrant metropolises. In the wilderness, we will find both enemies and enemy checkpoints that are just waiting to be taken over by us. Planets known from the first Destiny will also be present in the sequel, but will be added on a later date. Due to the new technology used by Destiny 2, it won't be possible to import our characters from the original game. Transferring any sort of content from the first Destiny will probably turn out to be problematic.

Battle Brothers (PC)

Strategy 24 March 2017

A combination of a turn-based strategy and an RPG, developed by Overhype Studios. Battle Brothers takes the player to a medieval-like low-fantasy world, where they become a leader of a mercenary band. The player can have up to 12 fighters under their command, and each of them has a portrait, name and a backstory, apart from a set of features that affect their stats and capabilities on the battlefield. The game does not make use of character classes, thus the player can assign weapons bought or taken from the enemies without any restrictions. The basic weaponry includes a set of medieval tools, such as swords, spears, axes, bows or crossbows. Different kinds of weapons offer interesting special attacks - for instance, axes can break shields; maces on the other hand, can stun the enemy so they lose their next turn. On their path, both when completing assignments and exploring the world, the player encounters various enemies, fighting ordinary bandits, hostile mercenaries, forest creatures, tribes of orcs and goblins, as well as the undead and terrifying ghosts. If the player manages to survive for long enough, they are faced with one of the ending crises. Those include an invasion of orcs and goblins, a plague of the undead, and a war between the local noble families.

Heroes of Might and Magic V (PC)

Strategy 16 May 2006

The fifth installment of the popular fantasy turn-based strategy game series. To freshen up the franchise, the production of the game was entrusted to Nival Interactive, an experienced Russian developer, whose portfolio includes such games as Rages of Mages, Etherlords, Silent Storm, and Blitzkrieg. The game takes place in the land of Ashan and focuses on the war with hosts of demons, who, having killed the king, are ravaging the country. The fate of Ashan lies in the hands of heroes, who confront the forces of evil in order to defend their home factions. The new developer decided not to revolutionize the gameplay and instead focused on the strategic aspects and minor modifications of the game's mechanics; for example, the heroes no longer participate in battles, there are no separate town screens, time limits during combat have been added, and new diplomacy options are available. It is the first game in the series to feature a fully 3D environment.

Bomber Crew (PC)
Bomber Crew (PC)

Strategy 19 October 2017

Bomber Crew is a hybrid of a strategy game and a simulator, with some additional RPG elements. Developed by Runner Duck, the game allows a player to assume the role of a WWII captain commanding a bomber crew. During the game, one has to complete numerous missions, which involve eliminating strategically important military targets and making reconnaissance behind the enemy lines. The gameplay is divided into two parts – the preparation stage involves selecting recruits as a bomber crew has to comprise a pilot, a mechanic, gunners, a radio operator, a navigator, and a gun loader. A player should pay close attention to the recruits he selects, as their death on the battlefield is permanent. When airborne, one has to monitor the condition of both his crew and his plane, as consecutive subsystems might break down – a spot-on shot on the plane’s tail might result in losing the maneuverability, similarly to a burning engine. Thus, during each mission, a player has to repair his plane. After completing a mission (when over a target, a player gets to operate the on-board systems in order to photograph the target or bomb it), one has to return home safely – provided he has enough fuel. Bomber Crew is bound to attract players’ attention with its colorful visuals and dynamic vessel damage system.
