RPG 25 July 2017
A unique tactical RPG from independent American studio Supergiant Games. The story of Pyre is set in a mysterious land called Downside, which is a variation on the Christian idea of purgatory. The main protagonist is rescued by a trio of masked travelers, who ask him to help them in unveiling the truth about the so-called Rites – an unusual competition, in which the winners can earn pardon for their sins and be freed from Downside. Pyre’s gameplay contains two fundamental parts. We travel in a special coach that is also used to manage our companions and make decisions that affect the land and its inhabitants. However, there is another and more important part of the game, in form of skirmishes we take part in, which combines features of MOBA and sport titles. A team of three characters must get a hold of a special ball and take it to enemy’s base.
The Escapists 2 (PC)
Simulation Tuesday, 22 August 2017
A sequel to the 2015 game by Mouldy Toof which was a unique arcade 2D platformer with elements of logic and RPG productions. In The Escapist 2, the players assume the role of inmates locked up in heavily-guarded prisons, and their task is to work out the security system and to escape. To do so, we have to look for allies and items that can be crafted into useful tools while pretending that we tend to our usual prison routines. Compared to the original, the game features a myriad of enhancements such as new ways of spending spare time, a modified combat system, a possibility of creating previously unavailable items, and new ways of escaping. One of the biggest novelties is the introduction of a drop in/drop out multiplayer mode in which up to four players can play on a split screen or over the Internet.
Simulation 05 September 2008
An unusual simulator, in which your objective is to bring to life a perfectly functioning species of organisms, starting from the lowest step on the evolution ladder. The game is developed by the legendary studio Maxis, led by Will Wright – the man responsible for such cult series as SimCity and The Sims. Mechanics combine elements of many game genres and each stage of your organism’s evolution offers a bit different quests and altered gameplay. Starting with the cell cycle and ending with a whole community, the game offers enormous scope of modification in regard to the appearance and other traits of your species. In later stages of evolution, the primitive organism gets a mouth, limbs, and other attributes that influence its ability to adapt and cope in various external conditions. With the game's progress, elements of competition with other species emerge and our, initially small, village becomes a huge metropolis with the newest technology.
RPG 15 September 2015
An old-school RPG from the independent developer Toby Fox, referencing the Earthbound series. Undertale's story takes place in a world that was witness to a lengthy, cruel war between humans and monsters after a long period of coexistence between both races. It ended with humans driving the monsters underground. Many years later, somewhere in the vicinity of the now-legendary mount Ebott, a little girl looking for shelter from the rain finds a cave and in it a mysterious hole, through which she falls. We play as this girl and explore the underground world, facing various monsters and interacting with various characters. The game’s most characteristic feature is the innovative battle system – we can engage in direct combat in the form of arcade minigames or avoid more difficult fights through talking and complimenting.
The Escapists (PC)
Simulation 13 February 2015
A prisoner simulator that combines features of many genres. It was developed by Mouldy Toof in cooperation with Team 17 Software. The player assumes the role of a prisoner who leads a “normal” life in one of several available penitentiary facilities. The main objective of the game is to plan a way of escaping from the prison. In addition to participating in a series of daily activities like various works, workouts, meals, walks and interactions with other prisoners, the player is also gathering seemingly useless items, looking for allies and observing his surroundings in order to find weak points of security systems. The final phase is to use the previously prepared plan and escape. The Escapist offers great freedom of acting and many ways of escaping depending on prison style (among which there is for example a military prison camp). The game offers retro pixel-art two-dimensional graphics presented from a top-down perspective.
Worms W.M.D (PC)
Strategy 23 August 2016
Another major installment in the bestselling turn-based strategy game series that focus on a humorous rivalry between the eponymous worms. In Worms WMD, the basic gameplay principles remain unchanged, and the players still have to eliminate the opposite team using a number of more or less unconventional weapons. The participants make their moves in turns and their actions are limited by a time limit. The game refers to the initial two-dimensional installments of the series, which means that battles are presented from the classical side view. The title does not lack for several enriching novelties, though. These include the possibility to hide inside buildings and to use vehicles that allow us to traverse the battlefield and deal damage to the enemy. Visually, the production features the characteristic cartoonish visual style, although the worms’ appearance and animation were refreshed.
Worms: Revolution (PC)
Strategy 10 October 2012
Another installment in a series of popular arcade-strategy games. Revolution references the older titles in the series, which was initiated by Team 17 back in 1995. Similar to the previous installments, the combat is turn-based and the player's goal is to exterminate the opposing team with a massive number of sophisticated, and sometimes silly, weapons and gadgets. Despite relying on a classic formula, the creators introduced several new features to the game. The maps were enriched with various objects which can be destroyed or moved to one's liking. The role of water is more important now, allowing the player to drown their enemies or wash them away. The worms were divided into classes for the first time, and those include the scientist, the heavy, the soldier and the scout - each class has its strong and weak points. Although the game utilizes a three-dimensional engine, the player observes the action from a side view. Contrary to several previous installments, Worms: Revolution does not offer the art style resembling comic books.
NBA Playgrounds (PC)
Sports 09 May 2017
NBA Playgrounds is an arcade sports game inspired by the NBA Street game series. It was developed by Saber Interactive, a studio mostly known for their futuristic first-person shooters like TimeShift and Inversion. In NBA Playgrounds, players take part in basketball matches. Even though the gameplay is based on classic rules, it has not much to do with reality. The players can jump incredibly high and do various tricks during those jumps. Nonetheless, mastering all of the game's twists, turns and moves takes some time. It has to be mentioned that the developers managed to acquire the official NBA license. Thanks to that, we can play as both current and old NBA stars. As we win, the players get new abilities, which allows them to do more complicated sport stuns. NBA Playgrounds can be played both in single player and multiplayer modes. The game has characteristic cartoonish visuals. Characters available in the game are caricatures of sorts of the real NBA players, and various lighting effects are present during our matches. All of this goes well with NBA Playground's gameplay.
The Pirate: Caribbean Hunt (PC)
Action 02 March 2016
An action game set in the world of pirates. Created by Miroslaw Dymek, a legendary Polish game maker responsible for series such as Earth 21XX or Polanie. The Pirate: Caribbean Hunt lacks a main storyline driving the gameplay. The action takes place in an extensive, open-world environment recreating a large part of the Caribbean. The player controls a captain of a pirate ship, whose aim is to gain fame and riches at sea. The game consists of completing subsequent missions that focus mainly on combat and exploration. The player plunders cargo ships, pirate bases, forts, and harbors. Between the missions, the player can make improvements to their fleet, choosing from sixteen diversified classes of ships, upgraded alongside their progress in the game. In-game sailing features realistic mechanics, making it a great asset to the game - this element was based on the personal experiences of the creator, who is an avid sailor himself. The game has offers extended online features as well, allowing the players to create their own pirate clans.
March of the Living (PC)
Strategy 20 April 2016
A two-dimensional retro game that combines elements of real-time strategy, roguelike action game and survival. The title was developed by an independent developer known as Machine 22 and the team at Creaky Corpse (authors of the browser MMO game Dead Frontier). March of the Living employs the popular zombie apocalypse theme. In the game, the player assumes the role of one of the survivors who, together with a few other people, are trying to reach a safe haven in which humanity can start rebuilding civilization. The gameplay mechanics of March of the Living are clearly inspired by FTL: Faster Than Light. While traveling through procedurally generated world, the player fights zombie hordes, meets allies and reacts to random events. The game offers a tactical battle system with active pause. In order to survive, one must obtain food, weapons and other needed items, manage his supplies and make hard decisions.
Flying Tigers: Shadows Over China (PC)
Simulation 26 September 2017
An arcade flight simulator set in Southeastern Asia during the Second World War. It was developed by Ace Maddox - a Swedish game-making studio. The plot is based on historical events and the game tells a story of a secret combat squad of volunteers standing up for China against Japan's aggression. The game is characterized by arcade flight physics, focusing on spectacular aerial acrobatics and shooting in the TrazerTime mode which slows down the passage of time. Faithfully recreated Far-Eastern setting and a set of fighter planes belonging to the American, British and Japanese air forces are definitely strong features of the game. It is also worth noticing that the game offers dynamically changing weather conditions, which affects the air battles. The game features a standard single player campaign and several multiplayer modes for up to 16 players in one session.
Action 07 December 2015
Helldivers is an arcade cooperative science fiction shooter developed by Arrowhead, creators of the humorous action RPG Magicka. The game takes place in a distant future where players take the roles of the members of the elite Helldivers unit whose job is to protect the politically divided planet known as Super Earth. It was attacked by three alien races. Players have to finish procedurally generated missions in order to save mankind. Before we start, we can choose up to four special abilities for our unit. As we progress, we get new weapons and upgrades. Missions take place in tours that last for a couple of weeks. The game's campaign (which can be finished in single player mode) is the same for the game's entire community, so the successes and failures of other players influence the story's outcome.
Five Nights at Freddy's (PC)
Adventure 08 August 2014
An original horror game created by Scott Cawthon, an independent gamemaker. The player assumes the role of a watchman who takes up a seasonal job at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. What is important about the restaurant, is that mechanical mascots are its main attraction. A seemingly easy job turns into a true nightmare during the very first night, when the protagonist discovers that the sympathetic animatronics come to life after dark and display a hostile attitude towards humans. Trapped in a cramped watch room, the protagonist has to avoid contact with murderous robots during five subsequent nights. The task is not easy, because using various devices, such as lighting and monitoring systems, as well as locking the door drains the power supply, which has to be appropriately managed throughout the entire night. Despite its simplistic mechanics, Five Nights at Freddy's provides a good dose of anxiety and is capable of frightening the player with ease.
Killers and Thieves (PC)
Strategy 23 May 2017
An arcade strategy game with RPG elements created by Candle & Key, a group of enthusiasts led by Alex Thomas. The title gives us an opportunity to lead a medieval thieves and assassins guild. Our responsibilities include recruiting amateur troublemakers, and educating them to become experts of assassination and thievery. Every member of the guild has his individual statistics and abilities which are improved with every successful heist. However, the game uses a permadeath system, so the dead members don’t return to our manpower pool. The gameplay takes place in real time, with a team management module, based on a similar mechanic from the X-COM series, as well as base development and equipment management elements. The game is complemented by humorous, but incredibly cohesive and realistic 2D visuals.
Rock of Ages II: Bigger and Boulder (PC)
Strategy 28 August 2017
A sequel to the hybrid of a strategy and action game. Similarly as the first title, it was created by ACE Team. The gameplay mechanics are mostly based on the first game in the series and are focused on competition between the players. Each player has a castle that they must protect. The castles are connected by a long, winding path. In each round one side of the conflict controls a giant ball and tries to use it to break through the gate of the enemy fortress. The opponent is trying to position his troops and buildings in such way that he stops or at least slows down the rock. Rock of Ages II: Bigger & Boulder allows up to four players split into two teams to compete. The title allows the player to modify the banners and costumes of units, introduces new soldier and rock types, and offers new maps that reference various historical periods. Unreal Engine 4 technology provides high-quality graphics.
TrackMania 2: Lagoon (PC)
Racing 23 May 2017
Trackmania 2: Lagoon is the fourth Trackmania 2 game, the most popular installment of the series created and developed by the French studio Nadeo. In terms of mechanics, the game uses the same system we know from the previous installments in the series. We race against other drivers on uncommon and crazy race tracks. Though the overall premise of the game did not change, it has a rather different climate, literally. Trackmania 2: Lagoon gives us access to sixty five tropical race tracks that are the revamped version of the archipelago that was available in 2016 Trackmania Turbo. Single player is still the fundamental game mode here, but Lagoon also offers a multiplayer mode with six different game modes available. The game comes with a level editor.
Spider-Man: Homecoming VR (PC)
Action 30 June 2017
Spider-Man: Homecoming VR is an arcade action game developed by Sony Picutres Virtual Reality as a part of the promotional campaign for the Spider-Man: Homecoming film. We play as the titular super hero. Our job is to test the new suit and new web blasters that were given to us by Stark Industries. The fact that Vulture breaths down our back only complicates things. In the end we will be forced to face him. The game is made of a series of challenges that test our aim, reflexes, and observation. We will be using all kinds of spider web while doing them. We use it to shoot at static and moving objects, move and throw environmental objects, and travel around the roofs of New York’s skyscrapers. We observe the action from a first-person perspective. Spider-Man: Homecoming VR is a virtual reality game that requires VR goggles to be playable and is free-to-play.
