Arcade 26 May 2017

A third-person view adventure game developed by Tequila Works studio from Spain, which successfully debuted in 2012 with a post-apocalyptic platformer Deadlight. You assume the role of a boy who is trying to escape a mysterious island that conceals a sinister past. During the course of the game you will solve numerous puzzles, using a magical artifact that allows you to manipulate the environment and time. The title, despite being an action game also includes many platformer elements. The hero travels through an open world, climbs craggy cliffs, and jumps over chasms. Apart from being skilled, you also have to be perceptive, as light, sound, and touch (thanks to the technology offered by PS Vita and DUALSHOCK 4) play a vital role in Rime. The game features a 3D environment, colorful visuals, and a comic book-like visual style.

A sandbox platform game by indie studio Re-Logic, sometimes called the 2D version of the popular Minecraft. There is no set goal; your task is basically to shape the randomly-generated world around you. At first you only have a few basic tools, which allow you to dig and find resources, chop wood, and create simple structures. As the game progresses, due to the extensive crafting system, you discover better tools, allowing you to create advanced materials and to fight monsters. There are many possibilities in the game, and the only restriction is your own imagination. Terraria features a single player mode, but you can join forces with other players, thus gaining precious allies, who can help you with the more challenging tasks.

Arcade 14 February 2012

A two-dimensional platform game, the gameplay of which references classic installments of the series. The story of the game takes place before the events told in the first installment of the series. The action of the game takes place in a fairytale realm called the Crossroads of Dream. When the world is threatened by an invasion of dark creatures called Hoodlums, the titular protagonist and his friends decide to save it. During the game the player will visit various fantasy realms, jump between numerous platforms (the action is shown from side perspective and the player can move in four directions), get past various traps, obtain new abilities and fight enemies encountered on the path. There is more than a dozen types of enemies, as well as much more powerful bosses. What's more, the game contains levels in which the protagonist mounts other creatures (for example a giant mosquito) and rides it through large areas. Cooperation mode is a novelty in the series – it allows the player to complete all levels while accompanied by up to three friends. The colorful, beautiful graphics generated by UbiArt Framework are a valuable asset to the game. Colorful locations are accompanied by neatly-animated characters and a catchy soundtrack.

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth (PSV)

Arcade 04 November 2014

An expanded version of a popular indie game that has been released in 2011 by Team Meat studio. Nicalis studio, a bit more experienced team, has been involved in refreshing of the title, in cooperation with original developers. When it comes to mechanics, the gameplay hasn’t changed much, offering randomly-generated levels, traversed by the titular Isaac, who solves simple puzzles and eliminates monsters or much more powerful bosses. The main difference between the Flash-based original, is a completely new graphic engine, introducing new, improved visuals and a number of innovations that, as a result of technological limitations, hadn’t made their way into the original. The developers included the whole base game and its two DLCs, and introduced a number of novelties. A local co-op mode has been incorporated in the game, allowing two players to take part in a joint playthrough on one screen.

Deadbolt (PSV)
Deadbolt (PSV)

Arcade 20 February 2018

An old-school two-dimensional platformer with elements of stealth. It was created by Hopoo Games, a studio known for Risk of Rain. In the game, the player becomes an embodiment of death itself, coming to Earth to stop an undead invasion. Both the sides of the conflict are a bit unusual, because the Grim Reaper uses knives and firearms instead of a scythe, and as for the undead, they are overly watchful and intelligent - they can even wield pistols and rifles. Deadbolt puts large emphasis on stealth-action gameplay. The protagonist usually dies from a single hit, which forces the players to stay hidden and attack by surprise. This does not mean the game lacks dynamism, because it features a cover system that allows for a fairly effective exchange of fire. Therefore, each of the levels in the game can be completed in multiple ways, depending on the player's preferences.

Limbo (PSV)
Limbo (PSV)

Arcade 04 June 2013

Very unique two-dimensional platformer from the independent developer PlayDead. We play as a small boy who sets on dangerous journey to save his sister. He traverses surrealistic landscapes, coming across many deadly traps and running away from monstrous spider, which follow him tirelessly. In terms of gameplay, Limbo borrows from classic platform titles, though not without adding a few original features. The games revolves around advanced physics, which plays crucial role in most puzzles and arcade sequences, during which the players must display quick reflexes. What stands out the most, however, is Limbo’s unique, mysterious and grim atmosphere, mainly coming from its audiovisuals. Sparse use of sound and graphics, consisting only of shades of black and white, makes it look like a work of a movie expressionist from the beginning of 20th century.

Arcade 26 September 2017

A sequel to the 2013 metroidvania title, developed by Image & Form. Once again, the players are taken to a unique world that combines steampunk with western setting, this time as a female robot looking for her missing friend. The gameplay of SteamWorld Dig 2 doesn’t depart from the groundwork of its predecessor, focusing on digging underground tunnels to reach places of interest and find treasures we can spend to upgrade our equipment. There are also various enemies to defeat with our more or less fancy weapons. Like the previous works of Image & Form, the game features good-looking cartoonish visuals.

Exile's End (PSV)
Exile's End (PSV)

Arcade 25 October 2016

A 2D action game inspired by the classic shooters for Commodore 64 and Amiga computers, such as Flashback or Another World. The hero of Exile’s End investigates a space colony to find out why it has lost contact with Earth. He soon finds out that his employers have been conducting some shady experiments. Gameplay wise, Exile’s End is a mix of platformer and action game. We explore the planet’s surface and fend off enemies with various weapons, with a boss waiting at the end of each level. Aside from the story campaign, which lasts several hours, the game offers a survival mode, in which we go through a series of crowded stages of increasing difficulty and upgrade our weapons and equipment between the levels. The old school 2D visuals of Exile’s End resemble classics of the 8- and 16-bit era, as does the soundtrack composed by Keiji Yamagishi (Ninja Gaiden, Tecmo Bowl, Captain Tsubasa).

Arcade 18 March 2014

An action-platform game developed by independent Swedish studio Image & Form. The game takes place in an unusual universe that combines the traits of steampunk and Wild West. Once human civilization had fallen and Homo sapiens species degenerated and transformed into troglodytes living underground, weird creatures that are mostly robots became the new dominant species. One of them is the main protagonist of the game, Rusty. While looking for remains of human civilization, he starts a journey deep into the ground where he looks for interesting treasures. During the game the player is traveling through caves, avoiding traps, fighting enemies, collecting minerals and making sure that he always has access to light. The protagonist can use various useful tools that enable him to decide in which direction to dig vast tunnels. After filling the backpack it is possible to return to the surface and trade found minerals for various goods and upgrades for the protagonist.

Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee (PSV)
Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee (PSV)

Arcade 28 August 2012

A two-dimensional platform game with traits of an adventure game and a stealth game. The title, developed by Oddworld Inhabitants, takes place in an unknown planet inhabited by the race of Mudokons. The main protagonist of the game, Abe, is a Mudokon as well. This race is being abused by evil Glukkons, who force them to slave labor in a mine. When the protagonist discovers the new plans of the “master race” (they want to process Mudokons into tasty food), he decides to escape and save his friends from the danger. In Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee player is jumping between platforms, sneaking up behind the back of his opponents and solving various environmental riddles. During the game the protagonist can also give orders to other Mudokons. Since the protagonist has no health bar or energy, a single enemy hit is enough to kill him – in that case Abe respawns at the beginning of the level. The title lacks any interface – all information is presented in the level or on special tutorial screens.
