RPG 15 August 2017

An old-school RPG from the independent developer Toby Fox, referencing the Earthbound series. Undertale's story takes place in a world that was witness to a lengthy, cruel war between humans and monsters after a long period of coexistence between both races. It ended with humans driving the monsters underground. Many years later, somewhere in the vicinity of the now-legendary mount Ebott, a little girl looking for shelter from the rain finds a cave and in it a mysterious hole, through which she falls. We play as this girl and explore the underground world, facing various monsters and interacting with various characters. The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel (PSV)

RPG 26 September 2013

Another installment in the popular Japanese RPG series developed by Nihon Falcom Corp. Once again, players get to travel to the land of Zemuria, more exactly to the territory known as Erebonia, where the Thors Military Academy is located. The school is attended by children of both gentry and common citizens – the exception being the 7th grade comprising only the main protagonists of the game. The action of the game is set during one school year, in which the students increase their skills, acquire military experience, and overcome the differences that divide them. The background of the story is filled with ever-growing tension in the society that might result in an outbreak of civil war. The plot of The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel features a non-linear structure and is shaped by the decisions made by the players. In comparison to the previous installments in the series, this game stands out with its multiple improvements, the most prominent being the TPP perspective, which has replaced the typical for the series top down perspective. Additionally, the game features more dialogues and a modified combat system. Once again, battles are turn-based, however, they are more dynamic because of the combo system enabling players to mount spectacular and powerful attack sequences. Moreover, the choices a player makes throughout the game affect the combat efficiency of particular characters.

Salt and Sanctuary (PSV)

RPG 28 March 2017

A dark 2D platformer with RPG elements, developed by the team of Ska Studios, known for its original and equally brutal productions The Dishwasher and Charlie Murder. In Salt and Sanctuary we take on the form of a pirate whose ship crashes near a mysterious island inhabited by hordes of drowned and their powerful masters. By eliminating hordes of enemies and bosses the protagonist gradually discovers the secrets of the island, and thanks to the raw materials he acquires, such as gold and salt, develops his equipment and skills when visiting safe enclaves (titular sanctuaries). The hero has a considerable range of weapons and magic skills at his disposal, and the key element is the proper selection, because too much unnecessary equipment negatively affects the protagonist's mobility and special abilities. The game features an extremely gloomy atmosphere and hand-drawn artwork, typical for the studio's early productions.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II (PSV)
The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II (PSV)

RPG 25 September 2014

A continuation to a jRPG bearing the same title; the game is part of a larger universe from the The Legend of Heroes series. Trails of Cold Steel II begins a month after the events depicted in the first installment. The civil war in Erebonia outbroke for good. Rean's goals are to find the remaining students from the Seventh Grade, as well as to put an end to the bloody conflict, which has torn the protagonist's native country apart. Although the experience is based on the gameplay formula of the previous installment, the creators decided to introduce a few changes. The so-called ''Tactical Link System'', which provided new combos and other tactical abilities used in conjunction with other characters with whom the protagonist has established relationships, appears in this game in the company of the new, ''Overdrive Mode'', which allows the linked team-members to incessantly perform attacks during even up to 3 turns in a row. Exploration was improved as well - the player traverses the extensive locations on foot, aboard a modifiable airship, on horseback, or by a motorcycle. Furthermore, the protagonist can recruit allies from among NPCs scattered throughout the game world. The game comes with decent-quality graphics inspired by anime cartoons.

Bastion (PSV)
Bastion (PSV)

RPG 07 April 2015

An action RPG developed by Supergiant Games - a studio established by Amir Rao and Gavin Simon, who both are former employees of Electronic Arts. In the game, a player assumes the role of a hero named Kidd, who one day wakes up in his bed drifting amongst the remains of the world, in which he used to live before. The young lad embarks on a journey to find other survivors and provide them with shelter. The world of Bastion that is drifting through the void is not at all a safe place - it crawls with monsters that our hero has to face using an elaborate arsenal of both close combat and ranged weapons. Moreover, since particular locations literally are hanging in mid-air, a moment of distraction might result in Kidd falling off the map. The game described herein stands out from similar productions because of its method of delivering the story (the actions of the main protagonist are described in real time by a narrator) and the original visuals featuring colorful, hand painted, and highly interactive sceneries. Interestingly enough, in spite of the fairytale-like style of the game, Bastion tells a grim story about the apocalypse. The game has been recognized with many prestigious awards.

RPG TBA

A side-scrolling jRPG with strong elements of classic beat'em ups. Fallen Legion was developed by an American studio YummyYummyTummy. The game came out for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita; the two versions differ mainly in terms of the story. This is obviously noticed by Legatus Laendur (the protagonist in the PSV version), who's lust for power makes him try to take control over Fenumia. The core of the experience is constituted by fighting enemies in a real-time combat system. The key to success is to make a good use of the individual abilities of the controlled characters, apart from being able to skillfully combine attacks of the entire team into complex combos; however, having quick reflexes is also needed. Furthermore, the player has to make more and less important decisions many times - those influence the course of the story and what the game world looks like.
