The plot is based on the comic books and takes us to grim, post-apocalyptic world, in which the remnants of humanity enclosed themselves in a series of towering walls after being nearly driven to extinction by gigantic Titans. RPG 28 March 2017

A dark 2D platformer with RPG elements, developed by the team of Ska Studios, known for its original and equally brutal productions The Dishwasher and Charlie Murder. By eliminating hordes of enemies and bosses the protagonist gradually discovers the secrets of the island, and thanks to the raw materials he acquires, such as gold and salt, develops his equipment and skills when visiting safe enclaves (titular sanctuaries). The hero has a considerable range of weapons and magic skills at his disposal, and the key element is the proper selection, because too much unnecessary equipment negatively affects the protagonist's mobility and special abilities. The game features an extremely gloomy atmosphere and hand-drawn artwork, typical for the studio's early productions.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II (PSV)

RPG 25 September 2014

A continuation to a jRPG bearing the same title; the game is part of a larger universe from the The Legend of Heroes series. Trails of Cold Steel II begins a month after the events depicted in the first installment. The civil war in Erebonia outbroke for good. Rean's goals are to find the remaining students from the Seventh Grade, as well as to put an end to the bloody conflict, which has torn the protagonist's native country apart. Although the experience is based on the gameplay formula of the previous installment, the creators decided to introduce a few changes. The so-called ''Tactical Link System'', which provided new combos and other tactical abilities used in conjunction with other characters with whom the protagonist has established relationships, appears in this game in the company of the new, ''Overdrive Mode'', which allows the linked team-members to incessantly perform attacks during even up to 3 turns in a row. Exploration was improved as well - the player traverses the extensive locations on foot, aboard a modifiable airship, on horseback, or by a motorcycle. Furthermore, the protagonist can recruit allies from among NPCs scattered throughout the game world. The game comes with decent-quality graphics inspired by anime cartoons.

Bastion (PSV)
Bastion (PSV)

RPG 07 April 2015

An action RPG developed by Supergiant Games - a studio established by Amir Rao and Gavin Simon, who both are former employees of Electronic Arts. In the game, a player assumes the role of a hero named Kidd, who one day wakes up in his bed drifting amongst the remains of the world, in which he used to live before. The young lad embarks on a journey to find other survivors and provide them with shelter. The world of Bastion that is drifting through the void is not at all a safe place - it crawls with monsters that our hero has to face using an elaborate arsenal of both close combat and ranged weapons. Moreover, since particular locations literally are hanging in mid-air, a moment of distraction might result in Kidd falling off the map. The game described herein stands out from similar productions because of its method of delivering the story (the actions of the main protagonist are described in real time by a narrator) and the original visuals featuring colorful, hand painted, and highly interactive sceneries. Interestingly enough, in spite of the fairytale-like style of the game, Bastion tells a grim story about the apocalypse. The game has been recognized with many prestigious awards.
