The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth (PS4)
Arcade 04 November 2014
An expanded version of a popular indie game that has been released in 2011 by Team Meat studio. Nicalis studio, a bit more experienced team, has been involved in refreshing of the title, in cooperation with original developers. When it comes to mechanics, the gameplay hasn’t changed much, offering randomly-generated levels, traversed by the titular Isaac, who solves simple puzzles and eliminates monsters or much more powerful bosses. The main difference between the Flash-based original, is a completely new graphic engine, introducing new, improved visuals and a number of innovations that, as a result of technological limitations, hadn’t made their way into the original. The developers included the whole base game and its two DLCs, and introduced a number of novelties. A local co-op mode has been incorporated in the game, allowing two players to take part in a joint playthrough on one screen.
How to Survive 2 (PS4)
Arcade 06 February 2017
A sequel to the 2013 survival horror game How to Survive. The game, developed by Eko Software, is set in New Orleans, where the virus known from the first installment has turned people into zombies. The survivors have to fight for their lives and form teams in order to search for water, shelter, and useful items. The mechanics remained mostly the same, and the game places emphasis on the crafting system and character skill trees. How to Survive 2 utilizes an isometric view, and a huge part of the gameplay is once again fighting with zombies with the use of various weapons, including handmade ones, crafted from the elements you find in the game. Compared to the original, the game features as expanded multiplayer mode, allowing for camps consisting of up to 16 players, and the co-op mode for up to 4 players.
Shovel Knight (PS4)
Arcade 21 April 2015
Shovel Knight is a classical 2D platform game with elements of adventure and RPG, set in fantasy world. The title is a debut of the independent studio Yacht Club Games, hiring, among others, former employees of the experienced Way Forward studio. In the production, we impersonate a titular knight who, with the help of a legendary shovel-like weapon, fights the mysterious members of The Order of No Quarter. Traversing subsequent locations, our hero faces scores of enemies, including difficult bosses. Interacting with certain elements of the environment, he solves series of puzzles, facilitating the completion of a given level. Gameplay is modeled after classic platform games like Mega Man and Castlevania. Its old-school character is emphasized by pixel-art graphic design. The game lets you play alone or in a local multiplayer mode for up to 4 players.
How to Survive: Storm Warning Edition (PS4)
Arcade 04 November 2014
An action-adventure game with role-playing elements by indie studio EKO software. The main story campaign is set in an archipelago of four small islands near the coast of Columbia. This seemingly idyllic place turns out to be infested with ravenous zombies. The protagonists (you can choose from Abby, Jack or Kenji) need to rely on their determination and survival skills in this hostile environment. The gameplay of How to Survive features an open structure, giving you much freedom in the way you decide to complete the quests. There is a strong focus on survival aspects — the characters need to gather food and water, and also rest between battles with the undead. A simple crafting system allows you to create your own armor and useful items.
The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ (PS4)
Arcade 19 September 2017
Second DLC for The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth developed by Nicalis studio. It adds tens of unique items to create more surprising combinations, new monsters to defeat, the special bestiary that describes them, and bonus rooms that form a huge labyrinth. Aside from that, the add-on features more difficult Greed mode and an additional chapter, as well as a new playable character and five unique challenges. However, the most important novelty is the added support of modding tools, which allows players to freely modify the most important elements of the game and create new equipment, monsters, characters and even whole campaigns or game modes.
The Binding Of Isaac: Afterbirth (PS4)
Arcade 10 May 2016
A huge (approximately up to for 200 hours of gameplay) DLC expansion for The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth from Nicalis studio. It isn’t standalone title, requiring the base game to play. Afterbirth introduces many novelties, including a new final area with a unique boss and ending. However, it doesn’t change the game mechanics, as we once again play a roguelike arcade title, exploring randomly generated locations, discovering secrets and fighting enemies. The gameplay is diversified with additional content in the form of new character, Lilith, new monsters and bosses, as well as previously unavailable items, challenges and locations. What's more, the DLC also modified the interface and expanded the soundtrack. Lastly, players received a new game mode called Greed Mode, in which they take great risks to obtain unique rewards.
Shovel Knight: King of Cards (PS4)
The last expansion to a well-received game titled Shovel Knight. Both the add-on and the base game have been developed by Yacht Club Games. The main protagonist of the expansion is the titular King of Cards, who is one of the bosses a player has to fight as the Shovel Knight in the base game. The main protagonist has to prove his rights to the crown by defeating three usurpers from the neighboring lands. Similarly to the base game, Shovel Knight: King of Cards is a 2D platform game with RPG elements. The new hero fights and moves in a different manner than the previous protagonists - he mounts a short charge, which stuns the enemies and destroys some of the obstacles on the map. He also has a special ability - he can perform a pirouette on enemies' heads multiple times. As one progresses through the story, he acquires more powerful weapons, armor, and new companions. An interesting element of the game is the minigame, in which one can play cards with NPCs. The gameplay revolves around the story campaign, which is well complemented by special challenges, in which one can test his skills in platform puzzles as well as combat.
Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom (PS4)
The unofficial seventh installment in the Wonder Boy/Monster World series, developed by Game Atelier. Although the studio does not own the rights to the brand, the game takes place in the same universe and the story fits this specific world. The game is set in a fantasy realm and you play as the eponymous Monster Boy, whose task is to lift a powerful curse. To achieve that, you have to complete a range of levels and use the protagonist's unusual powers, which allow him to change into five kinds of beings — you use their abilities both when fighting enemies and solving puzzles. Although Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom references popular 1980s platform games, there are also role-playing elements. The game features oldschool 2D visuals, resembling legendary 16-bit productions.
A two-dimensional arcade platformer with RPG features from Discord Games studio. Chasm tells a story of a soldier who returns home after a long war. He arrives in an abandoned mining town and discovers most of its inhabitants have disappeared after entering a mysterious temple, deep down beneath the village. Our hero decides to stop the awakened evil, rescue the town’s inhabitants, and then safely return to his home. The game borrows many features from classics like Metroid or Castlevania, as well as The Legend of Zelda and Diablo series. The game's metroidvania-inspired premise is mixed with RPG mechanics, meaning that the hero can obtain new equipment and develop his skills. As we play, we must avoid traps, solve environmental puzzles and – obviously – fight with generic enemies and powerful bosses.
Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment (PS4)
Arcade 25 April 2017
Specter of Torment is a free DLC for the fan-favorite platform game Shovel Knight, developed by Yacht Club Games. This time, we play as a new protagonist, the titular Specter. The expansion takes place before the events of the base game. In terms of gameplay, Specter of Torment is identical to the base game, combining the elements of a 2D platformer, an RPG, and an action-adventure game. Once again, we observe the game from a side perspective. We explore some new fantastic locations, solve simple environmental puzzles, and fight the enemies. However, Specter has a new move set and skill set at his disposal. Unlike his predecessor, he can climb walls and other environmental objects, which opens new tactical possibilities for the players. The iconic shovel was replaced with a characteristic scythe.
Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows (PS4)
Arcade 17 September 2015
A free expansion to Shovel Knight, a well-received platform title developed by Yacht Club Games. This time, the players received a completely new hero – Plague Knight, who is known for being one of the antagonists in the base game. After his defeat at the hands of Shovel Knight, the fledging protagonist decides to leave his former allies and embark on a journey in search of ingredients necessary for creation of a mysterious, powerful potion. The gameplay of Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows is almost completely the same as its predecessor. We are given a mix of an action game, RPG, and a platform game – the game focuses on exploration of two-dimensional levels, and facing the encountered enemies. The new hero forces the players to develop completely new tactics – even if most of the journey takes place in reused locations, the new hero is not equipped with the trademark shovel – he makes use of bombs and short-distance flying. The list of novelties is complemented by new enemies and bosses.
Square Heroes (PS4)
Arcade 01 March 2016
Square Heroes is an arcade game developed by the creators of Square Off. Cross-platform multiplayer is the game's main focus. We play as genetically modified creatures whose only goal is to kill and destroy. They were created to save mankind, but now they fight against characters similar to themselves in the Galactic Hero's Tournament. Gameplay is not that dynamic, which makes lags less troublesome. The game has rather simple rules to follow. Before entering the tournament's arena, we have to choose our equipment from around thirty available weapons. We have have five weapon slots: melee weapons (i.e. an axe), small arms (pistol, crossbow, etc.), large guns (shotgun, flamethrower), explosives and special items, i.e. atomic bomb. We begin with level 1 weapons, but we can get money by killing our opponents, which we then can spend on higher tier weapons. Square Heroes also has character progression mechanics.
