Resident Evil 4 retains the dark feel of the previous installments and the game contains puzzles, but gameplay mechanics were greatly changed and the new engine allowed the developers to create faster and more dynamic action sequences. In the game, we assume the role of an engineer nicknamed Vandal who acts on behalf of the dangerous Unitologist sect who believe the appearance of the Necromorph is a part of a divine plan of annihilating the humanity. When the protagonist realizes the danger she has caused, she begins a race against time to prevent the epidemic from spreading throughout the entire base. Five Nights At Freddy's: Sister Location (AND)
Adventure 22 December 2016
Another installment in a series of popular horror games created by Scott Cawthon. The game can be considered either a spin-off or simply the next installment in the Five Nights at Freddy's series. In Sister Location, the players is taken to a completely new restaurant, where they are once again required to survive the five titular nights when encountering toys hungry for the protagonist's life. In terms of the mechanics, the game combines successful elements of the predecessors (observation of the building through a camera network for instance) with novelties introduced in the fourth installment, such as being able to move around or greater variety of actions the player can take.
Five Nights at Freddy's 3 (AND)
Adventure 08 March 2015
The third installment of the very popular horror developed by Scott Cawthon. The action of the game takes place in the titular restaurant which is overrun by deadly animatronics. When the memory of the tragic events that occurred in previous installments of the series becomes almost forgotten, the pizzeria that was closed for thirty years becomes renovated. The new owner intends to use the deadly past of the place as a marketing trick which will attract many customers. A new mechanic toy is a very important part of the decorations – there is only one, but it is stronger and scarier than its predecessors. The gameplay is based on similar principles as the previous installments of the series. The player assumes the role of a night watchman who must survive five nights in this dangerous place. Simple gameplay mechanics are only the tools used for telling an intriguing story which the player will reveal as he progresses in the game. The plot forces the player to repeat the game many times in order to discover all hints related to the story.
Five Nights at Freddy's (AND)
Adventure 26 August 2014
An original horror game created by Scott Cawthon, an independent gamemaker. The player assumes the role of a watchman who takes up a seasonal job at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. What is important about the restaurant, is that mechanical mascots are its main attraction. A seemingly easy job turns into a true nightmare during the very first night, when the protagonist discovers that the sympathetic animatronics come to life after dark and display a hostile attitude towards humans. Trapped in a cramped watch room, the protagonist has to avoid contact with murderous robots during five subsequent nights. The task is not easy, because using various devices, such as lighting and monitoring systems, as well as locking the door drains the power supply, which has to be appropriately managed throughout the entire night. Despite its simplistic mechanics, Five Nights at Freddy's provides a good dose of anxiety and is capable of frightening the player with ease.
Adventure 30 January 2017
A point-and-click adventure game with action elements, developed by one-man indie Anate Studio. You play as an unfortunate man taken to a forest by a murderer. In the last moment, the protagonist is rescued by a mysterious force, but as he looks for a way to escape, he quickly learns that he hasn't been saved yet and still needs to fight for his life. Octave utilizes a side view perspective. The gameplay focuses on traversing locations, which are full of not only puzzles but also enemies such as malevolent shadows and monsters. Apart from the already mentioned forest, you visit a haunted abandoned house or an ominous underground complex. Although the 2D visuals have an oldschool feel, Octave features a gripping atmosphere, underscored by the original soundtrack.
Fran Bow (AND)
Adventure 15 February 2016
A two-dimensional point ‘n’ click adventure game that tells a terrifying story of a young girl that suffers from serious mental disorders. Fran Bow is the debut project of the two-people studio Killmonday Games and was funded thanks to a crowdfunding campaign at Indiegogo. In the game, we assume the role of the eponymous Fran who witnesses the brutal murder of her own parents. The traumatized girl is taken to a grim mental hospital and her task is to escape the place as well as to find her beloved cat named Mr Midnight. As befits a true adventure game, Fran Bow is focused on exploration, conversations with encountered characters, and solving logic puzzles. To beat the last listed element, we will have to use medications in an appropriate, balanced manner. On one hand, they trigger horrifying visions in the protagonist’s mind, but on the other, they open her eyes to important clues that can help us push the story forward. The game is characterized by hand-drawn two-dimensional graphics that somewhat resemble the early productions of Tim Burton. The atmospheric soundtrack harmonizes with the heavy atmosphere of the plot.
Slayaway Camp (AND)
Logic 13 June 2017
Slayaway Camp is an unusual turn-based logical game developed by an independent studio called Blue Wizard Digital. When working on their game, the developers have drawn their inspirations from the 1980s' horror movies and at the same decided to mock their cheesy themes. A player assumes the role of psychopathic murderer tasked with killing the teenagers who relax on their summer holidays. The maps are relatively small and composed of square fields. The characters can move only in straight lines and stop only if they encounter an obstacle. With these limitations in mind, a player has to reach his destination, avoid traps and other threats, and lead his victims and police officers to the deadly traps. With time, one can unlock more playable characters and gadgets used in the game. The game features a humorous style, in which all the characters and locations look as if they were built from large bricks, while the murders themselves are more funny than terrifying.
Mental Hospital III (AND)
Action 30 November 2014
The third installment in the mobile survival-horror game series developed by Ukrainian studio AGaming+. The player assumes the role of a journalist who is hired to record an assault of Special Forces on a mental hospital where terrifying experiments take place. He reaches the destination late and finds the mutilated bodies of the soldiers and the corridors filled with mutants who used to be humans. His task is to survive and learn the dark truth about the hospital and the experiments that took place there. In Mental Hospital III the action is shown from first-person perspective and the controls are similar as in classic first-person shooters. However, the protagonist has no defensive capabilities, so he cannot fight the monsters and must sneak past them instead. In order to survive, one must learn the movement routes of the enemies, sneak up behind them and use the surroundings to hide from mutants.
From Beneath (AND)
A third-person perspective survival horror inspired by console productions of this genre. The action of From Beneath takes place in a town called Cedar Heights, which mysteriously turns into a living hell. The campaign tells a story of seven independent characters who have to fight for their survival. Mechanically, From Beneath is an action-adventure game with the camera hanging behind the character’s back. Each hero is different, but none of them was born a warrior. Therefore, battles pose a significant challenge and each bullet is precious. Usually, it is best to simply sneak behind enemies’ backs, stay in the shadows, and distract opponents in numerous ways. Gameplay is complemented by logic puzzles. The narration depends on the hero you are in control of – the title does not allow switching between the characters. From Beneath offers large locations, decent 3D visuals, and a professional voiceover.
Mental Hospital IV (AND)
Action 21 February 2016
The fourth installment in the series of mobile survival horrors developed by AGaming+ studio. All entries in the series are connected by the eponymous mental institution. He goes to an equally dark place, the Saint Maria’s Orphanage, where he intends to meet with an anonymous informant. The gameplay mechanics haven’t changed greatly in comparison to previous installment of the series. The player is tasked with exploring locations and avoiding contact with enemies. The protagonist is not able to fight the enemies, when he is noticed by them he can only escape. In comparison to previous installments in the series, adventure aspects of the game were greatly improved and enriched with simple puzzles.
