Kennedy, a character well known from the second entry in the franchise. A 2D adventure game inspired by supernatural horrors, developed by Night School Studio, a debuting team founded by the former workers of Telltale Games. As it turns out, during the party Alex and her companions have accidentally opened a gateway to another dimension, and the peace of teenagers is interrupted by increasingly strange phenomena, such as unnatural sounds and specters. Since a ghost's presence can’t always be detected with the naked eye, the heroine has to resort to a special radio that, after finding the proper wave frequency, helps her prepare for the possible attack in advance. The dark atmosphere of Oxenfree is complemented by climatic graphics, employing common horror movie filters, as well as an ominous soundtrack.

Five Nights at Freddy's (iOS)

Adventure 11 September 2014

An original horror game created by Scott Cawthon, an independent gamemaker. The player assumes the role of a watchman who takes up a seasonal job at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. What is important about the restaurant, is that mechanical mascots are its main attraction. A seemingly easy job turns into a true nightmare during the very first night, when the protagonist discovers that the sympathetic animatronics come to life after dark and display a hostile attitude towards humans. Trapped in a cramped watch room, the protagonist has to avoid contact with murderous robots during five subsequent nights. The task is not easy, because using various devices, such as lighting and monitoring systems, as well as locking the door drains the power supply, which has to be appropriately managed throughout the entire night. Despite its simplistic mechanics, Five Nights at Freddy's provides a good dose of anxiety and is capable of frightening the player with ease.

Slayaway Camp (iOS)
Slayaway Camp (iOS)

Logic 14 February 2017

Slayaway Camp is an unusual turn-based logical game developed by an independent studio called Blue Wizard Digital. When working on their game, the developers have drawn their inspirations from the 1980s' horror movies and at the same decided to mock their cheesy themes. A player assumes the role of psychopathic murderer tasked with killing the teenagers who relax on their summer holidays. The maps are relatively small and composed of square fields. The characters can move only in straight lines and stop only if they encounter an obstacle. With these limitations in mind, a player has to reach his destination, avoid traps and other threats, and lead his victims and police officers to the deadly traps. With time, one can unlock more playable characters and gadgets used in the game. The game features a humorous style, in which all the characters and locations look as if they were built from large bricks, while the murders themselves are more funny than terrifying.

Fran Bow (iOS)
Fran Bow (iOS)

Adventure 07 March 2016

A two-dimensional point ‘n’ click adventure game that tells a terrifying story of a young girl that suffers from serious mental disorders. Fran Bow is the debut project of the two-people studio Killmonday Games and was funded thanks to a crowdfunding campaign at Indiegogo. In the game, we assume the role of the eponymous Fran who witnesses the brutal murder of her own parents. The traumatized girl is taken to a grim mental hospital and her task is to escape the place as well as to find her beloved cat named Mr Midnight. As befits a true adventure game, Fran Bow is focused on exploration, conversations with encountered characters, and solving logic puzzles. To beat the last listed element, we will have to use medications in an appropriate, balanced manner. On one hand, they trigger horrifying visions in the protagonist’s mind, but on the other, they open her eyes to important clues that can help us push the story forward. The game is characterized by hand-drawn two-dimensional graphics that somewhat resemble the early productions of Tim Burton. The atmospheric soundtrack harmonizes with the heavy atmosphere of the plot.

The pixel-art graphics, inspired by the games of the 80s, complement the gameplay.
