Nintendo Switch is the successor of Nintendo Wii and Wii U consoles and is widely considered to be the first hybrid console on the market. It allows users to play games either at home on a big TV screen or while travelling. This is possible thanks to its revolutionary design, which combines features of both stationary and handheld consoles. It is composed of two main parts: the console unit, which is a 6.2" screen tablet based on Nvidia technology, and the docking station necessary to connect the console to a TV set. Nintendo Switch was released worldwide on March 3, 2017.

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus (Switch)
Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus (Switch)

Action 2018

Another installment of the best-selling FPS series, and at the same time a direct continuation to Wolfenstein: The New Order created by Machine Games. The Action of Wolfenstein: The New Colossus is set in 1961 – after waking up from a coma B.J. Blazkowicz and his companions find the United States of America occupied by the Nazis. The main protagonist finds common ground with the leaders of the local resistance, and decides to help them fight the invaders. As in the previous Wolfenstein installment, the gameplay in The New Colossus features exploration, completing consecutive missions, and eliminating scores of diverse foes. The players are given a wide range of murderous weapons – including not only classic firearms but also some more elaborate pieces. Interestingly, once again the developers have decided to abandon health regeneration mechanics in favor of the old-school med-kit system. The game features high-quality 3D graphics – in comparison to its predecessor, the most significant are the texture and special effect enhancements that accompany the gunfights.

Splatoon 2 (Switch)
Splatoon 2 (Switch)

Action 21 July 2017

A continuation of a multiplayer-focused TPP shooter from 2015, developed for the Nintendo Switch console. Splatoon 2’s gameplay follows its predecessor and lets the players control Inklings – joyful human octopuses who fight using paint-based weapons. Those can be used not only to attack opponents, but also to paint the map – which is one of game’s objectives and allows increased movement speed and faster ammo regeneration. Major novelties include e.g. new weapons (Splat Dualities), moves (Dodge Roll) and heroes (including refreshed versions of the old crew). Controls have been adjusted to both Joy-Con and Pro Controller (a more classic gamepad). It is important to note that in both cases the players can use gyroscope, which is useful for aiming.

Doom (Switch)
Doom (Switch)

Action 10 November 2017

The fourth part in one of the most famous FPS franchises in history, originated by id Software Studio in 1993. Since then, the overall story premise remained basically unchanged, having the player take on the role of a sole commando who has to fight hordes of demons from Hell spawned in a military research base as a result of a failed experiment. In contrast to the third game, which featured numerous horror elements, Doom focuses on fast-paced action, thus going back to the roots of the series. The hero learned some brand new skills, including spectacular finishers, making the gameplay even more brutal. One of the landmarks of the franchise is the considerable multiplayer mode, this time enriched with a useful tool called SnapMap. It lets players create not only maps and locations, but also their own play modes – from cooperative battles against enemy hordes to classic Deathmatches.

PayDay 2 (Switch)

The creators of PayDay 2 took special care to diversify the missions – as some mission elements are random, no two playthroughs are exactly the same. Just as in the first game, gameplay puts emphasis on the cooperation of up to four players. The game's impressive visuals are powered by Diesel Engine 2.0.

Sky Force Reloaded (Switch)

Another attraction are the optional missions, during which one must save civilians. These missions are very risky but completing them grants exceptional awards. Morphies Law (Switch)
Morphies Law (Switch)

Action March 2018

A multiplayer third-person shooter game developed by the independent German Cosmoscope. The action of Morphies Law takes players to a distant future, in which the humankind is a part of history. The only remnants of the human civilization are the buildings they have erected and the humanoid robots - the titular Morphies. A player assumes the role of such Morphy and engages in dynamic team matches governed by quite unusual rules. When shooting at a given adversary's body part, it is reduced, while the player's limb increases. This is well reflected in the gameplay balance (less skilled players are smaller, thus more difficult to hit) and in the possibilities opening before the players during the game. For example, a smaller robot can access previously unavailable locations; however, a machine with long legs can reach areas inaccessible for shorter machines.

BUTCHER (Switch)
BUTCHER (Switch)

Action 28 September 2017

A science fiction two-dimensional retro shooter by TransHuman Design. In BUTCHER, we assume the role of a cyborg who is programmed to kill humans on sight. The action is presented in a classical side view, and the gameplay is focused on traversing post-apocalyptic locations and eliminating encountered enemies. The protagonist fulfills this goal with several kinds of weapons, including, among several other things, a chainsaw that is a sort of a nod to the creators of Doom. Opponents can also be killed with elements of the environment and various traps, although it must be remembered that the cyborg we control isn’t immune to them, either. The gameplay is characterized by intense brutality and a high difficulty level, drawing inspiration from the style of the 90s era. The game features incredibly atmospheric pixel-art graphics.

Rogue Trooper Redux (Switch)

Action 17 October 2017

The game also features stealth-action sequences. Alongside progression, the player unlocks special skill chips - thanks to them, the protagonist can face challenges that would otherwise require an entire squad of soldiers. Compared with the original edition, Rogue Trooper Redux offers noticeably improved graphics.

RIVE: Ultimate Edition (Switch)
RIVE: Ultimate Edition (Switch)

Action 17 November 2017

A two-dimensional platformer game inspired by the classic, side-scroll representatives of the genre. It was created by Two Tribes – a Dutch developer popular mainly for the arcade-logic Toki Tori series. RIVE takes the player to an unspecified region of the galaxy, where they face an army of hostile robots, having taken control over a modern-day combat drone. Not only is the player-controlled drone able to move on surfaces, but it can also jump and fly, causing destruction within a radius of 360 degrees. What is more, the player can hack hostile machinery and affect its behaviour, which is done by collecting power-ups. In terms of the mechanics, the game follows the patterns established by classic platformers, though it offers up-to-date visuals – RIVE is filled with spectacular special effects. The gameplay itself is incredibly fast-paced here, offering an arcade experience without unnecessary boundaries.

Xenoraid (Switch)
Xenoraid (Switch)

Action 17 November 2017

A classic two-dimensional vertical shoot-em-all, taking place in a science-fiction universe. Xenogears was developed by an independent Finnish studio 10tons. The game takes us to 2032, where a conflict called the first galactic war forces humanity to defend its planet using an improvised fleet consisting of civilian space ships armed with various weaponry. As per the genre staples, the gameplay focuses around elimination of approaching hordes of enemies, interrupted from time to time with boss encounters that require more attention and a bit of tactical approach. Procedurally generated levels are definitely an interesting feature of the game – a level may play out different with every new playthrough, with the players unable to learn the enemies’ behavior by heart. Aside from that, the forces of humanity ale always represented by a wing – four fighters with different weaponry, with the player able to switch to a different unit depending on the type of enemy, or invite his friends to take over the remaining fighters in a local co-op mode.
