Red Dead Revolver

A third-person perspective action game developed by Rockstar Games, a company known for Grand Theft Auto and Midnight Club series. The game features a Western setting, starting during the final years of 19th century and the player assumes the role of Red, a man filled with lust for revenge. During his early years he witnessed the death of his parents at the hands of Mexican bandits that wanted to claim possession of a gold mine located on Red’s parent’s land. After many years he returns to his homeland and his main objective is to kill as many thugs as possible. The game, considered to be a Wild West version of Grand Theft Auto, is mostly about completing story missions and dueling based on the best movie westerns. The developers provided the characteristic style of the Wild West and recreated locations, buildings and characters that are typical of the genre. The players also have access to thirty different weapons, including revolvers, shotguns, rifles and explosives.

Red Dead Revolver is a game developed by Rockstar San Diego and released in 2004 on Microsoft’s and Sony’s consoles. The title was initially being developed by Japanese company Capcom but the rights to it, along with the whole development crew, were transferred to Rockstar Games. This caused a change of the convention – the title was at first planned as a Weird Western, but that was changed to Spaghetti Western. The soundtrack was inspired on compositions of Ennio Morricone whose work is known from many cult movies, such as The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. After twelve years since its original debut, the title was released in a refreshed version on PlayStation 4.

Plot

In Red Dead Revolver for PlayStation 4 the player assumes the role of the titular Red. The protagonist is a witness to the murder of his own father caused by a man named Daren – the right hand of general Diego who wants to gain access to a newly discovered gold deposit. The protagonist wants to have his revenge and his father’s revolver will be vital for achieving this goal.

The story is filled with many plot twists, which are presented in cinematic cutscenes. It is worth mentioning that despite the fact that the game is pretty somber, it also contains much humor.

Mechanics

The gameplay mechanics of Red Dead Revolver for PlayStation 4 are similar to the mechanics from the basic version of the game. The game is linear and it concentrates on the elimination of the enemies by means of a number of different guns – the above mentioned revolver is accompanied by various shotguns, machine guns and explosives. New weapons can be bought for cash obtained during the missions. The game takes the player on a trip through the most iconic locations known from western movies. Red will visit small towns, saloons and farms, he will even participate in a duel on the roof of a train. During the shootouts the protagonist must use surrounding objects as cover.

The gunplay is especially compelling because of a special mode called “Deadeye”. After filling a bar shown on the screen the player is able to slow down the time and aim more accurately or revise their tactics. In addition to that, from time to time they will participate in a classic duel at noon, in which the key to success lies in reflexes; drawing the gun at the right moment and shooting accurately before the enemy does.

Technical aspects

In comparison to original version, Red Dead Revolver for PlayStation 4 has improved graphics – the visuals are scaled to 1080p resolution and the game runs at 60 frames per seconds, providing a much better experience than two generations of consoles earlier. In addition to that, the title uses a trophy system and it allows recording videos and making screenshots.

Misc.

It is worth mentioning that Red Dead Revolver is the ancestor of the hit Red Dead Redemption. However, both titles share only the title and location – the characters and presented events aren’t related in any way. The characters from the first game in the series only appeared in the multiplayer expansion for the subsequent, and so far the greatest work of Rockstar San Diego.

Red Dead Revolver was developed by Rockstar San Diego, a studio previously known as Angel Studios. The title was at first developed by Capcom, but Rockstar Games took over the team and the rights to the franchise. This led to a change of convention from weird western to spaghetti western. The cinematic genre was not only an inspiration for the developers – it also served as a source of music; certain tracks by Ennio Morricone, which originally appeared in movies, were used in the game.

Plot

The story of Red Dead Revolver for PlayStation 2 starts in 1880 in the Wild West. Nate Harlow and his partner Griff had found a gold deposit in a place called Bear Mountain. The news about the finding quickly spread across the neighboring area and general Diego himself (a former soldier of Mexican army who leads a group of local thugs) became interested in such an easy fortune. The villains managed to capture Griff, who in exchange for sparing his life promised half of the gold he found. Diego accepted the proposition and sent Daren, his right hand, to the place. Nate, who wanted to protect his property, was killed by him. Nate’s son and main protagonist of the game, Red, saw all that. The protagonist swore vengeance and his father’s revolver is to help him in achieving the task. As the game progresses, the story becomes complicated and player learns about new plot twists from well directed cutscenes. It is worth adding that despite the serious atmosphere, there is some occasional humor as well.

Mechanics

Red Dead Revolver for PlayStation 2 is an effective shooter in which the action is shown from third-person perspective. The game is linear and the levels are placed in places typical for classic westerns, like small towns, saloons, farms and canyons. Red Dead Revolver also features a classic level inside a train. The gameplay focuses on elimination of enemies – the protagonist can not only shoot, but use surrounding objects and hide behind cover as well. He has access to around thirty different weapons, including the titular revolver and various shotguns, machine guns and explosives. New weapons can be bought for dollars obtained during the missions.

The Deadeye mode is an additional attraction – after filling a bar visible on the screen, the player can slow down time and aim more accurately or plan his actions better. From time to time he will also face bandits in iconic one on one duel at noon. In this case the time slows down as well and the player is tasked with drawing the weapon and shooting accurately at the right moment. As the game progresses, the difficulty of these duels increases and they require better reflexes.

Technical aspects

Red Dead Revolver for PlayStation 2 looks good. The player can enjoy character models filled with details and surroundings that are rich with side activities. The high quality graphics are reinforced by an atmospheric soundtrack, extracted from cult westerns.
