Heroes & Generals for PC / Windows is an unconventional war game designed for multiplayer gameplay. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that it offers the players three different types of gameplay. The first is a standard shooting game with a FPP view , the second is a browser strategy game, and the third is a series of mini-games dedicated to modern smartphones. The game was created by the Danish studio, Reto Moto, founded by former members of the IO Interactive company who created the popular Hitman series.
The developers focused primarily on the FPP aspect of the game. Mechanically, it resembles a lot of shooters and MMO games on the market, therefore allows the creation of different classes of characters (e.g. sniper, pilot, tanker), buying inventory by scoring golden and silver coins or purchasing them for real money, and then take part in combat in vast and varied maps, close in size to those of Battlefield series.
While playing in FPP, the task is, among other, to capture/defend key points on the map, taking control of supply points that allow respawn closer to the frontlines, as well as the infiltration of hostile terrain, and sabotage of enemy operations in special single player missions. The developers implemented the ability to drive different kinds of vehicles such as tanks, armored vehicles, planes, but also, surprisingly, bikes. FPP mode puts an emphasis on team cooperation and supports many dozens of players playing simultaneously. It also contains many elements of realism, for example determining the power of the throw, the need for refueling vehicles, changing weather conditions, or the day and night cycle.
The element that distinguishes the gameplay in Heroes & Generals on PC / Windows is primarily the strategic mode. Directions of attack on FPP maps are determined on the basis of decisions made at the two-dimensional map of the entire theater of war. It is divided into small sections, connected by supply lines that are different colors depending on who controls them – Allied or German forces. For the in-game virtual money, we create and place different types of combat units, from infantry, thourgh mechanized infantry and armored divisions, up to the fighter squadrons. The player can then send them into battle. When you reach the point of combat, the server creates a game in FPP format or automatically determines the outcome. People involved in the FPP game can also ask for support the players who spend time in the strategic mode. In this way, the situation on the front is constantly changing and is very dynamic.
Strategic Mode is dedicated to all lovers of classic games in the style of Hearts of Iron and Panzer General. It allows planning of defense and attack, and everything is done via a standard Web browser, where we see the strategic map of the area on which the operations take place.
The final element of the Heroes & Generals are known as casual games. Through smart phones or social networking sites, the players can support their friends on the battlefield by decoding secret messages of hostile intelligence or conducting air strikes.
The game is supported by a central server. Through actions in three different modes, the players influence the situation throughout the conflict. Heroes & Generals uses the free-to-play business model and offers a micropayment system, allowing for special war debentures pruchase, so that every month we recover a portion of the amount invested in them with an interest added.
FPS mode graphics are carefully made, contain a large amount of detail, but do not utilize the latest capabilities of PCs. The strategic mode offers a neat graphic design in 2D. The soundtrack was composed by Jesper Kyd, a well-known composer of soundtracks for such games as Darksiders II.
