Papers, Please

An unusual logic game and a satirical take on the communism. It is the first commercial project from Lucas Pope. The story is set in a fictional socialist country named Arstotzka. The country was at war with the neighboring Kolechia for a few years, but now it is over. The city of Grestin has become a crucial point on the new border between the two countries. The player is put in the shoes of a new customs officer whose task will be to carry out border checks in order to neutralize potential smugglers, spies, and terrorists. Before giving someone permission to enter the country, the player not only has to check their papers and verify the data against a primitive database, but also order searches and inspections. Despite the simplicity of mechanics, the game features an extensive story campaign which ends in one of several alternative ways, depending on the player's choices.

Papers, Please for PC / Windows is an unusual logic game and a satirical criticism of communism. It is the first commercial project of Lucas Pope, the creator of a few similar, free titles, including The Republica Times and 6 Degrees of Sabotage.

The action takes place in a fictional communistic country called Arstotzka. We assume the role of a young officer who is a new employee of a local customs service. Our motherland has recently ended a 6-year war with its neighbor, Kolechia. As part of the peace agreement, both sides agreed that their border crossing will be located right in the middle of the town of Grestin.

Opening of borders means that it is necessary to rigorously control all people trying to get to Arstotzka. Our task is to do so in order to catch smugglers, spies and terrorists. We have to accomplish this by analyzing documents, conducting inspections and personal searches, as well as by accessing a primitive fingerprints database. Next, on the basis of the information gathered and suspicions aroused with these modest means, we have to decide whether or not to let a traveler pass or even whether to throw him into prison.

Papers, Please for PC / Windows offers a story campaign in which our choices ultimately lead to one of a few alternative finales.
