NOON

Hipster Whale was founded in 2013 by Matt Hall and Andy Sum. The men decided to work together to create Crossy Road, which they worked on for 12 weeks - 6 weeks more than they originally planned. The developers were inspired by various projects, including such hits as Dota 2 (business model), Temple Run (endless runner) and of course the famous Frogger. The game debuted on Android in January 2015, and, like the iOS version released a few months earlier, it turned out to be a great success, loved by millions of people around the world. The game has no excessive requirements - you only need a device with Android version 2.3.

Mechanics

In Crossy Road, available on the AND platform, PC, etc., we play as a hen which has to overcome a route full of various dangers (cars, trains, etc.) and obstacles (e.g. trees blocking the road). Our character can only jump forward and turn sideways. We need to use these skills when crossing busy streets, railway tracks or when jumping over logs flowing along a fast-moving river. The game is easy to learn, but achieving high results requires the player to have a lot of dexterity, a lot of training and a bit of luck.

During the game we collect coins, which are useful when drawing new characters (you can play with a cow, sheep, horse or Doge, a dog known from online memes). New characters can also be bought with real money, and this is the only element available in this way, because the developers have not introduced any mechanisms to limit the game to those who don't want to pay.

Technical aspects

Crossy Road uses cartoon style graphics. Developers used the pixel art technique which makes this game look similar to those released years ago. This does not mean, of course, that the application looks old, because in practice it does look good, just like many current titles.

Other

Crossy Road received positive media ratings and was appreciated by numerous players. Three months after the release, developers at Hipster Whale recorded revenue of $10 million and 50 million copies downloaded.
