Dragon Fantasy: The Volumes of Westeria is a special collection of two remastered old-school role-playing games: Dragon Fantasy Book I and Book II, which resurrected the legend of classic console RPGs from the 1980s and 90s. The collection was released on PC and Nintendo consoles, thus making it the first chance for owners of these platforms to play the second part of the series, which had previously been available only on PS Vita and PlayStation 3.

Plot

The games take you to the eponymous Westeria continent, where evil spreads its influence and two nations are warring for domination. The story is split into chapters, each featuring a different protagonist. Actions of these heroes have significant impact on situation in Westeria. Among others they are: a once famous hero who gets back to the world-saving “business”, a prince searching for his missing brother and an original duet of a thief and his niece. Interestingly, one chapter takes the characters to a Minecraft server, where they search for a hat that would allow them to get back to the real world.

Mechanics

Dragon Fantasy series draws inspiration from two cult jRPG series: Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, and combines the solutions of these two classics with daring sense of humor characteristic of yet another legend of that time: EarthBound. Apart from many adventures, conversations with non-player characters, and battles fought with randomly spawned opponents, the game could not miss out on a character progression system. Along with the story progression your heroes are gaining better and better weapons and armor and more powerful spells.

Technical aspects

When it comes to audiovisuals, the Dragon Fantasy series takes much after the classic stylistics, offering old-school graphics and retro sounds. While the first game is a tribute to 8-bit titles from 1980s, the second one features somewhat newer visuals, characteristic of 16-bit games from mid 1990s.
