South Park: The Fractured But Whole

Another installment in an RPG series based on the Comedy Central’ cult adult-oriented cartoon TV series. The title is a direct sequel to South Park: The Stick of Truth released in 2014. However, unlike that game, this one was created by an Ubisoft’s subsidiary. Once again you play as the New Kid, whose family just recently moved in to South Park. This tim, Cartman and his group play the roles of superheroes, making up the vigilante group of Coon & Friends. They have to face a new danger, the villainous Professor Chaos. In terms of gameplay mechanics, the game is similar to its predecessor, combining classic RPG elements with turn-based combat, further spiced up with a big doze of nasty humor invented by the creators of the TV series: Matt Stone and Trey Parker.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole is another, after the 2014's South Park: The Stick of Truth, cRPG set in the universe of South Park, an iconic cartoon TV series for adults. In contrast to the previous title, which was developed by Obsidian Entertainment, a studio renowned among RPG fans, this game’s production was entrusted to Ubisoft San Francisco, the team behind a popular music game series, Rocksmith. The new developer invited the creators of South Park TV series – Trey Parker and Matt Stone – to contribute to the making of this game. The two gentlemen are responsible for the game’s script and dialogues.

PC / Windows version of South Park: The Fractured But Whole was officially announced during Ubisoft’s E3 2015 media briefing. Same as the previous game, released for PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3, The Fractured But Whole was designed for personal computers and the new generation of Microsoft and Sony's consoles, allowing the developers to spread their wings in terms of employed technology.

South Park, an animated TV series broadcasted on Comedy Central since 1997, is equally iconic as it is controversial, mostly because of its offensive humor and the crude language used by its teenage heroes. Over the years the universe created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone received multiple video game adaptations. Such titles as South Park: Let’s Go Tower Defense Play!, South Park: Tenorman’s Revenge, or finally South Park: The Stick of Truth were released on Microsoft’s past generation console.

The sequel to the latter title is a cRPG entitled South Park: The Fractured But Whole, released on Xbox One. Unlike its predecessor, created by the experienced Obsidian Entertainment, this next game was produced by Ubisoft San Francisco, mostly known for their music game series Rocksmith. However, the American developer did hire the original creators of the TV series to write the game’s script and dialogues.

In March 2014 South Park: The Stick of Truth was released on PlayStation 3. That game implemented the universe of the popular cartoon TV series by Trey Parker and Matt Stone into an unusual framework – RPG with turn-based combat. South Park: The Stick of Truth met with favorable response from both critics and fans of the TV series, so it was not a big surprise when Ubisoft announced its sequel on E3 2015, entitled South Park: The Fractured But Whole.

However, Ubisoft decided to change the developer – it is no longer the experienced Obsidian Entertainment, but one of the company’s subsidiary studios, Ubisoft San Francisco, mostly known for their successful music game series, Rocksmith. The team once again invited the TV series' creators to take part in the works as the authors of the script and dialogues for this next installment. Thanks to that, South Park: The Fractured But Whole, which was released for PlayStation 4, retained all the characteristic elements of the beloved TV series.

Story

The Fractured But Whole takes you once more into the eponymous town of South Park. Again you play as the New Kid, whose family moved in recently. This time Cartman’s gang impersonate Coon & Friends, a group of superheroes. Of course, the New Kid gets to join this elite social circle. Together with Mysterion, Toolshed, Human Kite, Mosquito, Mint Berry Crunch and other superheroes he takes on a new enemy – the dreadful Professor Chaos.

Gameplay

In terms of gameplay mechanics, South Park: The Fractured But Whole for PC / Windows is not much different from its highly acclaimed predecessor. Hence, we get to deal with an unusual, for a South Park game, genre – cRPG featuring turn-based combat. You control the actions of the New Kid, and you are free to explore the city, do various missions, talk to characters you meet, and collect useful items. When it comes to the combat – similarly to classic cRPGs, characters attack in turns, each time dealing a specific number of damage. In combat your heroes employ an arsenal of weapons and superpowers, ranging from hilarious to absurd, which – as befits an RPG - can be developed as the game progresses.

Game modes

Just as South Park: The Stick of Truth – the previous game in the series – also the sequel is meant for single player only.

Technology

Released for PC / Windows South Park: The Fractured But Whole is powered by the same game engine as the previous installment in the series. However, since the game was designed for the 8th generation consoles, the graphics has seen some minor improvements; No major changes were introduced to audio though. As previously, most characters are voiced by the fathers of South Park: Trey Parker and Matt Stone.
